What a lovely place in the middle of the countryside. Little train, cafe, and a gift shop. Did the trip around the which was really interesting. The miller was very informative. Bought some organic spelt in the way out and will be using it to make bread when I get home. Cafe is superb, sensible prices, super friendly staff and table service. All in all a very enjoyable day out. Lovely heritage with friendly, knowledgeable staff, lovely little cafe and the small railway which can take you to the castle and cider shop and back. The tour is recommended and the guide is very good and hands on with showing the mill. The shop is also stocked with the they make too. There's also and art and gift shop on site. Not all areas are accessible though due to the nature of the buildings. There is some parking available at the mill. This is (part of) why we regularly visit the mill. Absolutely the best for home made 'Artisan' bread. Be it fancy tomato or olive enhanced, or good old sourdough this consistently produces great tastey bread. Followed by a walk from the Etal Ford down the banks if the Till, this was a most enjoyable day out. Heatherslaw corn mill, which has existed from the 1300s, provides a very informative close-up view of how these mills work. We were aware that the drought in May 2025 (when we visited) didn’t have enough water for the to operate, but this had considerable information and items to explore. (There are also times when the river floods the mill.) I’ve visited several mills in recent years, but Heatherslaw gave me the clearest understanding of the different grains and their stages through to final product. Another interesting exhibit is the display of spades, hoes, dubbers, forks, and other tools, The mill’s features are well labelled. The miller also gave an excellent description of the mill’s activities and history. The countryside location and the enjoyable meals in the café added to the enjoyment of this visit. Visited in late May 2025 Nice place to have a stroll but, my god, the cafe staff are mardy as hell. Would it kill the waitresses to be pleasant and welcoming to their paying customers? Also, expecting people to run upstairs, get a table number then come back downstairs to order is unreasonable when you have mobility issues or kids/dogs in tow, given that in the meantime someone else can nab your table. Just give out table numbers at the till and collect them when delivering the food and drinks. Much easier for everyone. Other shops staff were very friendly. Very interesting place to visit. There is a guide who does a demonstration on how things work most days tells you the history of the mill. Plus you can buy the they sell in there shop. Not to busy would recommend a visit. beautiful place by a river. Very interesting! Nice area, Food & Drink from the Café was good. Only issue was the bathroom as there are only 2 stalls ( one of which was closed when I went ). Wait times were a bit long but aside from that cleanliness was great and very accessible to people with disabilities. Another note that made my rating not a perfect 5 is the prices. Very expensive for simple items in the Gift Shop and in the Store itself ( Café prices were good ). I will definitely be visiting again. Great café. The staff were friendly and very efficient and the food and drinks were brought to us quickly. There was a wide selection of tasty cakes and pastries, filled rolls etc and most importantly the coffees were excellent. Well worth a visit.
