Place was quite empty when we went so got a table OK. Staff were around but had to chase up drinks order but no problem. Food menu is limited but still an OK choice. Kids enjoyed their food and the adult portions are massive. Only slight downside was how much grease there was, everything was swimming in it. Chips had lots of black bits so not sure how fresh the oil was. Pint of Marsden was perfect and prices reasonable. Kids play area is not good so don't count on it. Worth a visit if you like big portions and fried food Very very good steaks. The chips are served in a separate bowl so you can have as many as you like. Mushrooms and tomato easily swapped for 2 fried eggs.. Nice A Lovely little country pub to meet up with friends and family or just passing through Abbeytown. Great service and very friendly xx We visited hear at the start of June whilst on a family trip away. Staff were very welcoming and helpfull. They were more than happy for us to have our dog sit with us in the bar area whilst we ate. Food was delicious and the cheese cake was to die for!! We took some of our dessert's home with us as was full from our mains but they were worth the wait and great portion sizes throughout! Highly recommended. Went for Sunday lunch. Was given a table straight away. Sunday lunch came a nice sized lunch with vegetables served separately meat was cooked to perfection all staff were brilliant at what they did. Well done and thank you. Will be visiting again in the near future Food was class service excellent pub clean and tidy ale spot on will go again We loved the new decor inside the Wheatsheaf as we hadn’t visited for a long while. The atmosphere was relaxed and the staff friendly and attentive. Sunday is the only day food is served here so be sure to make a booking for Sunday lunch between 12.00 and 5pm. The food was delicious and the portions enormous . Next time I will ask for a child’s portion! My partner started with carrot and coriander soup, it was tasty and substantial. The main course was roast beef for both of us. Everything was locally sourced, the beef coming from a mile away. Generous portion of fresh mixed vegetables, loads of gravy and the biggest Yorkshire puddings we have ever seen. There was a good choice of wine at a reasonable price. We couldn’t manage a dessert, but will definitely be returning only in my case to smaller portions. One of the best Sunday lunches in the area. This place used to be known for excellent food. Since it’s changed hands it’s really gone down hill. Frozen chips, used to be “proper chips”. Lasagna looked awful coming out and and tasted how it looked and was sent back. A battered chicken burger that was lacking in any taste. The staff seemed to be largely new and helpful, but got the feeling that it was lacking leadership or management (owner was on a day off, which is absolutely understandable). I’m guessing that it’s not a trainer chef in the kitchen. Unfortunately the once high quality produce has gone. That along with what are pretty high prices for what you’re getting just doesn’t work. Maybe ok while summer and holiday makers use the place, but for those who used to go because they knew it was always a good feed won’t be going back again when they see what the current standard is, is my opinion. However; the beer was excellent and the staff appeared to be genuinely trying their best. Hopefully it will get back to what it was just a short while ago.
