I've often passed this impressive church, with its distinctive 202ft spire, on coach journeys along the A55 on the way to the North Wales coast or Snowdonia. This time, we made a stop here, and I'm really glad we did! The is more and ornate than I'd expected, with a fascinating history. There's tragedy too: the first thing we saw upon entering the churchyard was a red sandstone memorial to more than 80 Canadian soldiers who died in a military camp at nearby Kinmel Park in 1919 (most of them from the Spanish flu, but five of them in riots at the camp). The memorial stands among the neat rows of well-kept white gravestones close to the church. Consecrated in 1860, St Margaret's is known as the Marble because of the 14 different marbles that adorn its interior. The pillars are of a fine red marble. There's some very intricate wood carving, most notably the stunning ceiling, pulpit and lectern, and also some stained glass windows. Two welcoming and enthusiastic staff/volunteers were on hand to tell us anything we needed to know, and we could buy some nice cards and gifts at a little shop near the entrance. There are toilets outside the church, and also a few benches. It's well worth spending some here. A magnificent church, the pearl of the valley. Spectacular from the outside, the inside us just as remarkable. Ornate ceilings, decorated pulpit and lectern and a tableau of the commandments behind the altar. Nice stained glass. Outside there is a First World War Canadian cemetery. Absolutely stunning in fantastic condition, inside and out. The spire is very tall and filler with detail as are every window, filled with impressive stained glass. This is free to visit and has a donation box within the church. Free car parking and well maintained grounds. For almost thirty years I’ve driven passed this on my way into and from Wales and have never had the to stop. Finally, after all this I had some spare and decided to stop at the famous “marble church” I’d passed ever since I could remember. This is a lovely place and I was not disappointed. The exterior of this is absolutely breathtaking and stunning. Church, well worth a visit. The inside of the has marble columns inside, stain glass windows, and various other features. It is open 10am until 4pm daily. An absolutely place to spend some and a must visit, especially if you are passing. I feel like i should say no more. Wether you like the best of Victorian construction or marble or wood carving or the peace of a friendly and welcoming there is lots to admire here. There is a lot of interesting history here, from the story told in the churchyard about the Canadian World War troops or the short it took to construct this wonder and the assortment of 14 different marbles in the and the best of wood carving skills too. St Margaret's ( The Marble Church) was so and serene. The atmosphere when you see/ read the history is emotional. Beautiful stained glass windows, various marble features, statues and carvings were exceptional. There is a little gift area with a lovely selection. Would recommend a visit and to even walk respectfully around the grave yard shows the history , its like stepping back in time. Although the children' s section was too emotional it showed how life ( and death was ) all those years ago. Please don't think it's a sad place its really not its so inspiring.
