Roundway Down Iron Age Hill Fort

Devizes, United Kingdom Historical landmark

The North Wessex Downs are fabulous for walking and the Roundway area is great with the most outstanding views of the surrounding countryside. A great place for a bit of history whether Iron Age or the English Civil War ( Battle of Roundway). I thoroughly recommend this area for a good most especially on a sunny clear day, and just take in the spectacular views. Love it here. Fantastic day to spend in the sun... great in rain or snow for that matter. Need to be fit and agile to reach it but oh what views! Great place for dog walking but be prepared to carry your poop bags home again. A fantastic spot for history. Both iron age and civil war. Great for photography and picnics too. You have to trust in Google maps to get you there and go down a rough track for a mile. I made it ok in my van. Apparently the cavaliers won by pushing the round heads over the steep incline. Went for a around the wood then sat here for a picnic for my best friends hen do, had a singer Becky Lawrence come and play the guitar, was a beautiful place, good for kids and dogs. Can be a bit windy so don't forget a coat! Splendid early evening before getting fish and chip takeaway in Devizes. Simply one of those perfect walks, with dogs is best. Enjoy beautiful shaded walks through towering beeches to emerge on top of the chalk downs with expansive views across the vale/valleys, sit here for a moment and feel small but lucky.... an easy wander around the old fort groundworks will bring you looping back to the car park. Perfect for an evening on a summer's day. Part of my old stomping ground. Went back after 40+ years this July 24. Nothing much has changed except access to the viewing location. Driven past this place multiple time but decided to go visit it. Lovely if the weather is on your side. Take wellies or hiking boots if it's been raining. Driven past so many times, and wondered what it would be like to up there. Finally made it to the top today with the girls. Amazing, certainly blows the cobwebs away. One of my favourite places to go when I need to the dogs or just clear my head. Its also great for sunsets.
