We visited here after taking a nice hiking route from Kirkby Stephen. Apart from the there's not much here but we kind of knew that beforehand though. But it's very scenic and the weather was great. You can climb up on it and there is a small cellars like places in which you can crawl and explore it as well. My verdict - 7.5/10. This little ruin of a is really well worth a visit. OK 15 or 20 minutes and your done. But do stop and have a walk around and don't think it's all closed up , the is on a chain catch. Unfortunately you can't enter the to see the inside. But the history is great to learn about .... I'll let you do that ... the King Arthur story just might need a bit more investigation...😂 There is a lay-by right opposite the gateway for 4 , 5 at a squeeze, cars ... There are some stunning views 360° , and you could end up with a neck ache....😅🤣 Great little stop off as part of your dales itinerary. Off road available opposite the castle, its free to visit, just open the and wander on in, although at the time of our visit (mid 2025) you still couldn’t access the inner as it needs some TLC from Historic England. Beautiful to visit when in the area. Lots of friendly sheep in the area, make sure to lock the entrance behind you. The inside of the is “temporarily” closed supposedly opening back up in summer 2024 but considering it is still closed in August 2025, I’m guessing the governing bodies did not consent to the restoration efforts which is a big shame. Stunning surrounding area and even a stream at the bottom of the valley. I would definitely recommend visiting! The only downside for me is considering the history of the there is no information signage on site. It would be interesting to read about its ties to Arthurian legends and how it was burned down twice (exactly 200 years apart) and then dismantled 144 years after that. I love when historical sites have information about them to read so it was a shame not to have that this time.
