Originally built in the 11th century by the Normans on the site of a Roman fort, it was later expanded by the Clifford family in the 13th century and saw conflict during the medieval period. After being restored in the 17th century by Lady Anne Clifford, it eventually fell into ruin but remains a striking historical landmark today. We visited on our way back from what turned out to be a 1,400-mile journey through England and Scotland, and it was our final stop — we were absolutely knackered, but had no regrets whatsoever. This ancient place, full of atmosphere and layered history, was well worth the time spent wandering and learning. There's a small dining/resting area with a modest cafeteria where you can grab some nibbles; just a minute off the A66, it's a highly recommended venue for anyone passing through with even the faintest interest in history or a good view. There is a free small carpark for your convinience too. It's free to enter with easy access through a dairy farm. Stunning views all round and very interesting. The cafe here owned by the dairy sells lovely ice cream, cakes, sandwiches etc with loads of seating in and out needless to say we visited several times to enjoy ice cream with a view. Visited on a cold, windy morning. A lovely example of a ruined castle. I can't believe that one of the walls is still standing(wait until you see it)!! There is a large piece of the tower outside of the which must have fallen down many years ago. You can easily spend about 30-50 minutes here. There are a few information boards scattered about. There is a cafe/ice cream shop at the entrance. Unfortunately, they don't allow dogs inside and it was too cold outside at the time (it looked good though). All-in-all, for a few experience.. this was good. Picturesque ruins, free entry, with a lovely ice cream parlour and little playground right next door. Great way to pass an hour or so. Said hello to the new arrivals on the farm too! Good info boards. If you have a coffee in the nearby farm cafe, you can park in their car park. Nice with a nice cafe and ice cream parlour on the doorstep. Free entry so worth a visit if passing by. The ruins are magnificent. There are several information boards, one of which has a map. The views are beautiful and the grounds are clean and pleasant. Drones are prohibited and dogs must be kept on a leash. You aslo must not climb on the walls.
