Château de Chimay

The restoration is a labour of love that exudes an impressive appreciation of elegance at every turn. There is absolutely nothing that diminishes the ambiance and heraldic romanticism. We had been passing through Chimay on route to Rocroi and stopped here in free parking on the side of the main road near a small brocant up some steps. It is a short walk here over the pedestrian crossing towards a small river and chapel then up a modest and pebbled street where a very narrow passage invites exploration. This brings you to the front of the Château. There was nothing to dislike. The staff were lovely, kind, attentive and quite exceptional. We even saw the Prince and Princess. After all this is their home. The film of the Château is very interesting; so much so that one wishes one could have met some of those historical figures. Perhaps not Robespierre however. There are several signposts dotted around the town pointing the way but the impressive spire indicates a direction of travel. We are so glad to have stopped here in Chimay. Ot was an honour to see a that has been renovated very nicely and what is still a home for the Prince and Princess of Chimay. Fun experience, but the accessible parts within the are fairly limited. Interesting movie in the beginning, but mind that it's in French without subtitles. A truly well preserved with a very interesting visitor experience. You are provided with an iPad and an application. There is also some guides for you. We were lucky enough to meet the family living there. Make sure to pay a visit to the city of Chimay that is beautiful as well. I like everything and is very beautiful but I think they should open the room in first floor even 1 room or 2 rooms so we can see how is now and the rest i would like to tell they doing very good to keep history of that building. Excellent castle! The only problem that you can only visit a couple of rooms and the chapel. The family that owns it still lives there since the 1400s. is pretty nice. They have a video presentation dating the history back to the early days and the has a nice courtyard and interior. Sadly the parts open to public are minor and because the is built on a rock it has no moat or gardens. Worth it ? Sure, but expect to be done in around 1 hour. Came here before the entry time, so we had to wait. The saleswoman didn't seem to understand my aunt when she spoke French to her. But the place itself is really beautiful. Worth the time to visit. First there's a 30-35 minute video, but only in french (there's apparently a live-translator to get) and then 40-50 minute walkaround the place. Loved the tour!
