The Chapman family, linked to both Sir Walter Raleigh and T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), were its long-time residents until the early 20th century. Over the years, the fell into ruin but was purchased and meticulously restored starting in 1999 by Allen Sangines-Krause, transforming it into a modern and sustainable private residence with strong nods to its historic roots. Geothermal heating, solar panels, and a small wind turbine provide energy efficiency for the estate. The restoration drew inspiration from history but embraces contemporary art and design, making the interiors a unique blend of medieval, early Renaissance, and modern elements. Was an abandoned ruin until the present owner bought it and has completely restored it, and even is now filling it with furniture. Beautiful walks around the grounds and a magnificent boardwalk around the lake! This is a real hidden gem. The looks to have been beautifully restored and the grounds are stunning. There are so many places to discover, lovely hidden passageways, beautiful wooden bridge and boardwalk into the woods. The stained glass house is really impressive and a great photo op. There's a beautiful old boathouse, lakes , gorgeous gardens and a writers cabin overlooking one of the lakes. The kids had a ball, we spent about 4 hours exploring. The owner gave us the tour inside and not only is she lovely & down to earth, but was also so full of historic knowledge. Would highly recommend visiting the and doing the tour.
