Ginučių Piliakalnis

Papiliakalnė, Lithuania Historical landmark

Top-rated.online cuts through the clutter, highlighting only the reviews that are most helpful, earn the most likes, or come from the most active contributors. You wouldn’t expect it in the current silence of the forests and lakes of Aukštaitija National Park, but Ginučių Piliakalnis was an important military stronghold for centuries. From the 9th to the 12th century, a wooden fortress stood here and in the 13th to the 15th century, the famous Linkmenys castle stood here. The castle mound lies in the middle of the Šiliniškės ridge and the castle also guarded the trade route between Vilnius and Daugava. On the hill is a memorial plaque for Antanas Smetona, twice president of the First Lithuanian Republic. Ginučių Piliakalnis is therefore certainly of historical importance, but also a beautiful hiking destination. Lithuanian historical heritage in a nutshell. A double hill-fort surrounded by lakes and forests will give you the taste of what Lithuanians are proud of. The visit to Ginuciai should be incorporated in a bigger trip, though. The area is full of interesting points. Impressive vistas and views from the tops of the surrounding hills and mountains, however the stairs are in harsh disrepair and need renovation immediately. There is a serious risk of injury due to missing or broken steps, and massive tree branches laying down on the paths. Very tall grass. The viewpoint is blocked by bushes. Interesting historic hill fort with great views of the surrounding lakes. Free parking available below and a good spot to start/end a kayaking trip A rather steep hill to climb makes a good workout :) And the view from the top is surely worth it! Nice Spot to walk Nice views and many snails :) quite a many stairs!
