Went last night for the Wickerman burning and dead souls. People had dressed up and there were different stall there. A food place that did burgers and hot dogs and a drink place. Would like to see it during the day as looks an interesting place. Will return when there is another event on. Id give more than 5 stats if i could. Great day out for the while family. Horrific Absolutely fantastic I enjoyed Enjoyed kayaking on the lake, the Roman fort, and grabbing coffee and ice cream. Have a great season We went on an event day, so there were lots of things going on; individual tents set up with different skills and trades being demonstrated. All the "Romans" were extremely knowledgeable about what their roles were and were very able to answer any questions I threw at them. The site itself is still being constructed using only volunteers and traditional materials, so the Roman Fort was really only a wooden fence, but there were traditional tents and buildings inside it. There was a cafe on site too for teas and cakes. Only bad thing about it was the rather long to the Fort from the car park. Having a bad hip made that a very long and slow walk. The in the Past is a wonderful concept and fulfilment of a dream. For us as motorhomers, this is a special and unique place to stay overnight. Thanks to owner Paul, this old Quarry is being created into an outstanding community area. Whilst still work in progress the wild flower, conservation meadows are fabulous, the unique creation of a Roman fotress humbling and the lakeside beach just wonderful. I can't wait for the off grid camping. Paul, build it and they will come. £10 per night with services and the warmest welcome. Come support this amazing space. What a find! As seasoned open water swimmers we are always looking for new places. A local lady recommended here and it didn't disappoint. Very reasonably priced, including the food and drink in the cafe. Staff and helpful. Tow floats are a MUST! Oh and suncream recommended as the wind,water and sun makes for getting sunburned very easily. A fantastic day out. Will definitely return. The is crystal clear and full of wildlife. You can swim or paddle, take your own (do not forget a life vest or float) or hire a kayak. Amazing place for either a relaxing in nature or to learn about history in the huge Roman fort. Staff are lovely and so friendly. Amazing work being done here a must see. We had an absolutely fantastic class trip! Our Roman guide presented the history of Romans in Britain in such a fun and memorable way the children loved the whole day. From experiencing daily life in a fort by building roads and collecting firewood to learning about Roman toilets and spear throwing, it was an experience to never forget! We will definitely again. Went on a school trip with my son's Year 3 class today and it was excellent. The Roman auxiliary Brassius (Sorry if that's the wrong name) was brilliant with both kids and adults alike. Extremely knowledgeable, funny for the kids too. Such a great setting as well. 7 stars needs to be an option. Spent the day here today. Loved walking around and seeing the forts and the added suprise of goats! Every single staff member we spoke to were excited to see us and couldnt do anymore for us. Literally like seeing long lost friends they were that friendly. Super dog place!! Hope Water sports was the best fun iv had in years and well worth every penny! (Be smart about it. Hiring a canoe , kayak or paddleboard gets you full day entry and life jacket hire) hope watersport staff were so efficient and so helpful! I actually enjoyed falling in plenty of times and I know from the laughs the people on shore did too. The was lovely and warm and so very serene. It was busy when we went on a boiling hot day in the summer holidays yet we still had so much space to be by yourself. This place is amazing and well worth a visit!. Also to the wonderful owners. Please put overnight lodges here. I really didn't want to leave!! Concidering they have been under construction and improvments since i moved here last year, i was a little disappointed upon my first time visit. I came with my son and my dogs for a walk, £2 to get in and was told it was pram friendly. I wouldn't say it was pram yet as they have only got half a path made round the lake, the rest is just an un even grounds where cars have clearly driven on. before you get to the theres a rocky path to down, then a small wooden bridge, then a steap uneaven hill right after it. (which nearly tipped me and the pram getting up) The only part of the open to see was where people with boats were getting on and off from, the rest of the was covered in shrubs and over grown weeds. There are only a small few viewing points of the the rest of the way round. I Felt like i was just walking down back lanes tbh. I understand its intended for wildlife, however what is the £2 charged for as its not exactly a picturesque walk. I Found moss valley country to be more enjoyable or even Marford quarry. It's ok. The parking is quite far from the so be prepared for a fair (especially if you bring 20kg of kayaking gear). Facilities are alright, is very scenic but can get a bit busy. Overall it was an enjoyable day but I wouldn't go back again £3.50 per person to and around the lake, 2 hours max. Can in a city centre cheaper!! Great lake, nice staff in the cafe and on the front gate. However the gentleman in the Warden boat was quite aggressive and rude. Shouting at me that "He had already told me and to put on a tow float and if he sees me again I'll be out" This was in fact my first bit of dialogue with him. I was also just stood in knee-high water, playing catch with my son. He seemed to soften somewhat after I agreed to put one on and explained that this was in fact the first time I'd spoken to him. But it still felt unnecessarily rude, especially in front of a child when a simple, polite request would have sufficed. Put quite a damper on what was a nice day until that point. We’ve been lucky enough to work with those at in the past as well as enjoy their hospitality. A great bunch of enthusiastic people, striving to make something special for their visitors. As well as working with the we have also enjoyed the activities that they have to offer and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Especially the paddle boarding followed by a warm coffee in the café. Well worth a visit. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful, they were tripping over themselves trying to help. Information & help was superb, plus only £6 each to Paddleboard. Water was really warm too. All in all we had a fantastic time here. Will definitely be returning very soon.
