There is not much left of what was once a fort. But this hiss is perfect for a walk, with or without a dog, and has amazing across Somerset, including the Glastonbury Tor. It is quite a climb, and watch out for cow pats. Some amazing historical sites around this region, this one dating back 2000 years of more with both the Celts and Romans occupying this prior to it later being made into king Arthur's main office reside (500ad approx), possibly called Camelot. Great to be had from this large hillock, all the way to the coast, Glastonbury Tor and Brent Knoll easily seen. A quiet place now, not many visitors, lovely vibes , fresh air and even a car not far away, free too ! A fantastic site which offers an atmospheric insight as to where the ancient Britons lived. Site offers spectacular 360 degree that include Glastonbury Tor in the near distance. A wonderful place to walk, picnic & relax. Access to the site involves a short uphill hike which may not be suitable for some. Free car parking spaces at the base of the site are very limited, but on road parking is fairly plentiful within a short walk. No public toilets however a pub is located a short distance away. Highly recommended. Stunning and just a great sence of history. We found a pile of rocks and considered building our own Castle. This site would be tricky if you go when it's raining but not impossible with the right footwear! One of my favourite places to visit. No castle in the traditional sense, but still a special place to go to affording spectacular of the county. One of the best hillfort I've visited and I have been to many. There are cows around so keep your dog on a lead. It's a steep but short walk, car at the bottom. Worth the trip for the spectacular views. Brilliant place to walk. Lovely views. King Arthur and his knights still haunt this place. You can feel an eerieness as if you can sense the people going about their business who lived here before the Romans cleared it out and then it's subsequent importance for Ethelred the unready. Look out for gold Celtic torqs and the old Arthurian coin laying in the grass. Check out the local pubs and the friendly villages nearby. The little car servicing this castle is great. Beware wizards spells and avoid the steep drops down the sides of the hillfort where you could easily Tumble to your doom into a cow pat. Great place to walk- fabulous views. Brilliant afternoon walk, interesting views, wedding service in progress at the church next to it and a delightful fresh cider in the local pub. Amazing all round One of my favourite forts, easy to get to, fantastic views, great hiking, and you can down the other side to Sutton Montis Really big fort, steep climb through woodland tunnel to the fort. Keep to the main path and follow the left hand trail, as the right goes round the lower ramparts. Great views. Nice little carpark just off the road, right outside the cattle farm. Drive slow as its easy to miss and tricky to turn around as the road is narrow there. Not a bad place to have a round , being private land you can around using the trails but because of livestock there is a lot of fencing (electric fencing) stopping you getting to some trails. No information about the history one board was found on wall at start of lane entrance to , Good from top though. Trail around the bottom of through woods is easy going but again fences are a hindrance. Car parking area is near lane but no toilets and roads are very narrow lots of potholes , best way to get to area is by coming in from Spatkford by pass direction . Some of the most beautiful from our ever dwindling countryside. Have you ever see a stair master either in a gym or on a video and thought to yourself 'that looks EASY, I could do that for hours'.....1. No you can't (and if you can, do you offer training?) and 2. No you can't (unless you're from Yeovil and surrounding areas). I've recently got back into the gym after 4 solid years of turning myself into a lardburger and I was starting to get pretty darn happy with the results until....this little beauty came along....I thought I was going to need climbing gear! Before I got to the first gate, there was already someone beyond the first gate...running....effing well RUNNING up it for goodness sake. With a damaged ego, I sucked in a lung full of the fresh stuff and set about Walking at a decent ish pace.....No, I started sweating like I'd stolen something for crying out loud, all that work in the gym and I get beaten by a beautiful bloody hill....I digress. Once I'd steam trained myself to the top of the hill, the were absolutely breathtaking. Little tip, the car entrance for this is not as per Google maps, use What 3 Words - ///flamingo.districts.screaming Not so much a castle, but the remnants of a fortification dating back to circa 3000 BC. Perhaps the site of King Arthur's Camelot? Squint hard enough (having ascended the fairly substantial beforehand) and you can just about see traces... NB: This is private land, but public access is allowed. A free car is conveniently placed at the foot of the hill. It's a trek, but a worthwhile one. Cadbury is one of my favorite spots in the southwest. Beautiful of the Glastonbury Tor to the west, the white horse to the east and the Vale of Avalon to the south. I’m about to go and the ramparts and will post some pics, not the best weather for but oh well Lovely quiet atmospheric walk. Story boards give great insight into the history. Oh and the bonus was we saw at least two dragons, resting so walked softly to avoid disturbing them! Great I visited back in June 2024 as part of a spiritual road trip. There is a car provided with a short steep through woods (which can be really muddy) to reach the top . I found it ignited my imagination of stories of King Arthur, because at first glance there doesn't seem to be much there when you look closer it all starts to become clear and you can see the floor plan of where once was a castle . It has Beautiful 360 all round and is a peaceful location, although be mindful of the cows as they can be inquisitive! I loved it there and a year later I still think about it. *For any geocachers, there is a few hidden a long the way which is always a big bonus when visiting somewhere Incredible ancient with 360 of the surrounding areas and beyond. Wonderful for sunrise, sunsets, walks and a picnic! Sometimes local farmer grazes cattle up there. Steep access via a track, but this is easy enough for most. You can certainly feel the magic of Merlin and the legend of Arthur and his knights around the village and the mound! Visit at least once a year. Sunrise, a day after the Summer Solstice 2022. Absolutely sublime, just me, some cattle and the birds. The sheep in the valley welcoming in the glorious new day, partly drowned out by the traffic on the A303. Any time here would be magical, but sunrise on a clear summer’s day must take some beating. Oh, and then there’s the tiny wild flowers, yellow orchids nestling alongside some beautiful purple spreading flowers. Proper England! For such a legend to remain firmly entrenched in the hearts and hopes of 21st century citizens " may be just a dream" whereby peace, truth, and honesty lasted for a period of time through the Knights of the Round Table, representing their own Counties within Briton, but exercising chivalry throughout Ancient Briton thus suggesting some elements of a Utopia.
