We went half-term week restaurant busy food affordable but our meal was not cooked in middle. Dishes weren't cleared away from tables This is a fairly standard National Trust café with all the pros and cons that suggests. The service can be a bit hit and miss but the food is usually fine and the apple pie that I consumed was excellent (and much less sugary than the usual offering in restaurants). As a bonus you're allowed to take dogs inside (as well as children) which is a right bonus on a cold winter day. It was very and affordable! Two meals, and 4 drinks (two bottles of re:water, a latte and a 7UP zero) for 20 £! No complaints. Nothing gluten free at lunchtime except sickly sweet factory made brownies etc. Staff very helpful and apologetic, checking the ingredients file, but had nothing. I'm considering dropping NT membership as my main reason for coming to NT places now is for a walk followed by lunch or cake, and I'm increasingly finding nothing a coeliac can eat. It's not just my money they miss out on, as I'll often be with friends on a day out. Went with friends for the afternoon. But we didn't go in the restaurant. We had ice-cream and drinks in the court yard Lovely gardens and walks. Just nice to chill out. We've been here before many times, but today there was something a little amiss - it lacked the slick efficiency we've experienced before, there were several people trying to do the same job instead of just one or two focusing on one aspect and leaving others to attend to other things. As such it was a case of 'more haste, less speed'. That aside, the food was up to it's usual excellence, so top marks there, but a little more attention to staff and their individual job functions might be an idea?? Perhaps they were short-staffed?? That said, we are not put off, we will be back!! We stopped for lunch here before exploring the house and gardens. Overall it was ok, food was off a decent standard but nothing special. Staff were friendly but what let them down was the overly complicated and confusing system to order drinks and food which lead to confusion and slow moving queues. Anniversary walk in the rain and stopped by for a coffee and some cake to begin the day out. All however the restaurant windows and roof windows could do with a clean. We had a lovely lunch at the national trust restaurant after a super walk around the lake. A really loop walk. The song the 12 days of Christmas was represented by wicker figures. The cafe is a regular pitstop for us when we’re cycling. The coffee has a nice flavour to it (we get flat whites). There’s a selection of cakes and savouries. The cheese scones are nice and filling! Shame the cafe doesn’t do a loyalty card like some other coffee shops do. I’ve always found the staff efficient. Some of the plants on sale are unusual and if I wasn’t on a bike when visiting I’d have bought a few by now! Thus is normally a favourite place, but sadly the service was lacking when we called in for a quick coffee en route to an imortant family gathering in Bath. It wasn't busy at around 10.20, no queu at yhe till, and there were three young girls behind the counter doing not a lot. However, it took a full 10 minutes for a gluten free scone to be delivered to the hatch. Meanwhile our drinks were going cold. Lunch today was disappointing, to say the least! Luke warm meal of chicken pie, with hard pastry, served with lumpy mash and 'vegetables' (which consisted of a vegetable of tinned peas) all with a questionable gravy. Staff were pleasant and service good, although it was v. quiet. A great shame our enjoyable visit was marred by this meal. Have experienced far better on previous visits, and improvement is needed.
