I'd been looking at photos and longing to see this for years. Was pleasantly surprised that FINALLY it was part of our route. Oddly placed, but reverence is all around, when you're there. Worth the stop. Beautiful sculpture — convenient parking nearby. Beautiful monument. The craftsmanship of these stainless steel feathers is unbelievable. Need to see them in real life to appreciate them. There is an information board nearby describing the history of this unusual and why it was erected in appreciation of the very generous assistance given to the local by the Choctaw nation. If I put any more info you wouldn’t have to come and see it so get yourself here and take a look. An amazing story. The Choctaw saw their own suffering in another culture, and found enough to give- even after just walking the trail of tears 16 years prior. As a US citizen, this story shows that the amazing Choctaw wanted to help the Irish, when they themselves were suffering every day losing their land & homes. This is one of a few sculptures to thank the Choctaw for their monetary help, but also showing the kindness of who are also in need. All around a lovely story and such a beautiful sculpture to commemorate the gift. Beautiful and truly peaceful space to birdwatch. The history of camaraderie and compassion behind the piece is very moving. Really enjoyed coming out to see this. Though, I had thought the walkway would be much longer, stretching around the nature reserve, which is not the case so don’t expect a long walk! 😂 Nice to see if passing on towards cork but very little else around. Kindred Spirits We came across this when navigating around Midleton on our way to Midleton Distillery . It was noted on Google maps. Had vaguely remembered reading about a Native American and Irish connection some time back and was happy to learn more. We were directed to a small park in residential Midleton where large metal feathers were erected in honor of a gift of money given by the Choctaw Nation to the of Ireland during the Great Hunger. The amount gifted was substantial for the time and in light of the great oppression the Choctaw had suffered in the Trail of Tears just 16 years before it was heartfully received. The two nations were forever bonded at this time and in 2016, it was formalized with this homage and ceremonial recognition celebrated by a 20 strong delegation from the Choctaw nation. We heard about this gift and were reminded by a dear friend who was from Midleton. We are so glad to take a moment to visit... though the road nearby was closed for repairs. This was incredibly moving.
