Closure of the mines led to a catastrophic collapse in the local economy, and the story of the industry and its closure is chronicled by well presented storyboards. The park's centrepiece, an enormous "A" frame visible from miles around, is the last remining structure of its kind in Britain. The site is surely worth taking the time to visit to absorb the story of the rise and fall of coal. An amazing piece of engineering history. Would certainly recommend visiting this incredible structure. Very educational, an interesting portrait of life in the coal mining communities, the 'A' Frame is massive and has been painted in grey as a to the miners and their lives and community spirit. There is ample free parking and some picnic tables and benches nearby, lots of education display boards. There's also a headstone to 4 miners who died in an accident. There are lots of local walking routes nearby and a bmx cyclist track and playground for kids. The site is looking a bit tired now and in need of a good tidy up and weeding and renew some of the weather beaten display boards. The audio display "the miner's patter" no longer works. Such a shame it’s looking a bit run down as the structure is impressive. Even a grass cut would be a start. This is a very special piece of history. They have really made it a lovely place for little people as well as big. Really lovely memorial. Really interesting History of the mine nThe A frame is gigantic. Dogs loved the walks around it . Ex-mining location rewilding site open to the public. Interpretation boards and a paved parking area are available. Plenty of gravel paths for walking, dog walking, mountain bike trails and birdwatching. A few wildflowers here and there but mostly huge masses of tiny wee wild strawberry plants covering large areas. Great place for dog walkers. Plenty of bins, picnic tables and a play area for the kids. The A-Frame is quite imposing and I loved the history boards and memorial. Another hidden gem.. it has a touching for those who lost their lives. Also parking, picnic benches, a small play area and pet friendly.. nothing more needed here really. Nice spot to visit, even in the winter months. We took our dogs there and they loved it. The A frame is amazing to see…. But that height barrier is a joke, 2.1 meter clearance?! At least make it 2.5. Our micro camper juuust just under it and no more. I get it, it’s so stop fly tipping and loads of big motorbike using the place but 2.1 meters it’s too low.
