I visited the and town on it's opening day with a few friends and I really enjoyed the town with it's lovely buildings, quirky stalls, gorgeous hidden gardens and friendly people. The itself was smaller than I expected and absolutely heaving with people (as expected on the first day). To be honest if you hadn't booked to see anyone to motivation to visit the wasn't really there as there were no booksellers except one inside the festival, and the one book shop was rammed. Still I would definitely recommend a visit just to see the town. An incredible place to visit if you love books and would like to listen to authors. It's extremely busy though so various aspects of this made it difficult if you're mobility/sensory disabled however the staff were excellent. Another year at the and did not disappoint. Food and drinks a bit on the expensive side, but you can take in a packed lunch and water refilling stations everywhere. You have to pay £1 for your cups so keep if you are returning. I'd been to the UK Games Expo the day before, and there were more books, stationary, and crafty bits at UKGE than the Hay by a country mile. In fairness to them, we didn't attend any of the scheduled talks or anything, but still, for a day trip, me and my partner walked away feeling a bit let down. So if you're there to see a specific author, then by all means, but if not, I wouldn't recommend it.
