Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve is a hidden gem! The walkway paths are excellent – really well-maintained and easy to follow, making it a great visit for all ages and abilities. There are plenty of informative boards along the way, giving a real insight into the wildlife and history of the area. The bird hides are a highlight, especially if you're hoping to catch a glimpse of the Ospreys – we were lucky enough to see them during our visit! There’s parking available too, which makes access really straightforward. A peaceful, beautiful spot for a walk and some birdwatching. Thoroughly enjoyed this experience and the volunteers hosting the binoculars and the information stand helped make it a good experience. Luckily the ospreys had just arrived for the summer but I think it would be a nice experience even without the ospreys. (Can be slippery in the wet on the boardwalk). Views of the Osprey and nests were wonderful. As well as other wildlife. Helpful and engaging volunteers. Just no facilities! 🙂 If you’re a massive lizard fan, like I am, then Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve will not disappoint you. We visited on 1st August 2024, and saw at least thirty common lizards. There were baby ones everywhere, so evidently this is a fantastic breeding spot for them. We also saw a common toad crossing the boardwalk and a froglet in the long grass. Thankfully, we didn’t see any adders, though one of the volunteers did say this is a great place to see them. There are two bird feeding stations which had siskins, chaffinches, blackbirds, blue tits, great tits, bullfinches, a great spotted woodpecker and even a pheasant! Dragonflies hover around too - brightening the area with their delightful company. The boardwalks take you to two viewing platforms where you can see the ospreys. There are two nests: one on a manmade stand and another in a tree which has the offspring from a previous successful year of the current main pair of ospreys. While we were there, we saw the ospreys flying around, sitting on the trees and eating fish. You definitely benefit from having some binoculars as they’re quite far away but if you go on a Thursday when John volunteers, he is excellent and he allowed us to use his telescope which gave us a good view of the birds. We also saw a heron close up as it flew from the reed bed across the landscape. Overall, this is a wonderful place to visit if you’re in the area and love nature. The volunteers are really friendly and helpful, and there is parking for around 15 cars down a narrow track; it was very quiet when we arrived (9:30am) and easy to park. The best thing about Foulshaw moss is that it would be impossible to get bored watching the variety of birds flitting about. Also those with low mobility needn't worry as the very best place to see this is park up and you're able to watch from your car should you not want to leave it as feeders are lined up opposite. The Ospreys have gone again for now, but smaller birds still linger though only seem to be finches. Sticking with things that fly the dragon flies are in plenty supply and gorgeous colours, though watch your step as newts are on paths in places now. This is not a massive walk around even though different ways can be took BUT it does cater for a lot of different species from air to water and bogs. Definatly an interesting place.
