This area of Formio is not the greatest tourist attraction in Italy. However, walking through these old back streets mingled with some Roman history as well as a lovely touch of quaint local food places was just reminiscent of feelings I had many years ago when I first came to Italy and walked through the back streets of the small towns where my parents grew up. Go there if you have some time and maybe him at night when some of the little restaurants are open. Very nice ambience. This was difficult to find using Google Maps. I had to find a picture of the entrance and ask two or three folks before we found it. The cost of the visit was free. The is very simple. It is a cistern, as the name clearly states. You go down dark steps and start to hear water dripping. The whole is dark, very dark. I suggest letting your eyes adjust and/or using a flashlight. My partner didn't find it interesting. I did. It is another example of Roman engineering which still stands today. The guard at the entrance was very nice and helpful. By the way, the castle-like structure uphill a little ways is not open and seems to have nothing to do with this cistern. A knowledgeable guide brought the ruins to life, sharing fascinating insights into their history. The itself was awe-inspiring, showcasing the ingenuity of ancient Rome. Grazie, Cisternone Romano, for a memorable journey through time! Interesting site; however, we were slightly underwhelmed by the guided tour. The tour guide was friendly, but her English was limited (we are from America). There was an Italian couple also taking the tour and she seemed to have much more information to offer in Italian. Still a cool site, especially for the €3 entry fee. Fantastic!! It was amazing to go beneath the city and see the amazing work of the Romans. The guide was fantastic translating into English for us. Only €3 to enter. In a lovely district of Formia (some great places to eat afterwards really nearby). In July and August open Tuesday-Sunday from 7pm - don't go by what the website says. Great place! If you are in Formia, you should visit it. A place is unique and ancient. When you go down the stairs, you feel the atmosphere of the place. The walls are constructed from the orginal material which was invented by Romans. The guide was very nice and intelligent, answered all our questions. Many thanks for her work! Don’t miss this!
