Fantastic ancient country inn in the heart of the Yorkshire dales that’s well worth seeking out. Lovely local ale and serves food. Fantastic rustic ambience and amazing views of the rolling dales. Friendly on both sides of the bar. Occasional live music. May allow stopovers if spending a bit of money behind the bar on ale or grub but space is limited.Lots of local walks and dog friendly . Most highly recommended 🍻 Would be a 5* review if just the pub and the beers. The building is unique and historic, the bars are small and full of character. There is a cruik barn built at the back providing a larger area for meals. The range of cask beers is excellent, many local independent breweries are represented. Of particular note when we visited was Rudgate, Wensleydale, and Timothy Taylors. As I said, on the pub and the beers this would be 5*, but we also ate here. The menu is quite extensive and there is a lot of choice. However the options if you don't want to eat meat are very limited. These days being vegetarian is pretty common and even vegans are catered for in most establishments. Unfortunately, for non meat eaters, the only main course option was a risotto. The risotto was very good, tasty and filling. The starters were quite limited (although not as much as the mains) I felt the Hummus and bread starter was uninspiring, the tasteless bread was dry and the vegetable sticks not particularly crisp. The starter was poorly presented and pricey (£9) for what it was. The side of fries we had was uninspiring to say the least, acceptable but nothing else - I had a portion of chips in the pub at King's Cross Station last week that was at least three times better! Service was good, the food arrived in a timely manner. Once we'd finished our main we weren't even offered the menu again to select a dessert. I'd be happier coming back here in the future to enjoy the ambience and the beers rather than the food. I'd like to add that the bar staff were very pleasant and helpful, no problem with me trying a beer before committing to buy. I'd definitely recommend coming here, there is loads of outdoor space at the front, over the road and even behind the pub. The location is, of course, the stunning Yorkshire Dales. Great authentic pub with good selection of ales. We had a great lunch of burgers and Pie and chips/ mushy peas (proper not canned).Well worth a visit if in the area or hiking nearby / Simon's Seat. Friendly and hospitable staff who went out of their to find us a table inside when it started to rain outside. What a marvellous suprise! A superb genuine old world pub. Fab see of local beers. Delicious menu choice. Charming staff. And a characterful building. What more could you want? A beautiful pub and I would love to visit this place as the nights get colder and the fire is lit. Great food options, even for my gf diet. They also had some gf drinks and 0%alc options. Great service and very friendly staff. Definitely wise to pre book if you can as it gets busy quickly Is this place the best pub in the world? It's certainly a contender. Love it here. Brilliant staff, pints served properly and of the highest quality. Excellent food- they're just showing off! This place deserves credit as it shows how things absolutely should be done, wi no messin about! Child friendly. Free Wifi. Outdoor shed seating. Barn available for bookings/weddings. 100% Recommended 🍻 book ahead to avoid disappointment. Sometimes difficult to get hold of on the phone. What a place ! Staff friendly, outside views stunning and inside a dream to wander around and look at the features of this historic place. Fish and chips ( cooked in beef dripping, which took me back about 50 years ! ) are well recommended and kept us full all day. Dog friendly too, so I can definitely recommend a visit. My friend from France just loved it too. Ok but nothing special. Had a great beer then ordered the steak pie. Honestly had better pie and chips at the football. A rural restaurant is measured on its flag ship dish which is always the steak pie. Desert however was beautiful so hence the 3 stars. Service was very good also. Change the pie supplier and worth 4 stars.
