Great place if you want to swim, as the sea deepens pretty fast. It is a nice beach, with a view to the mountains, long, wide, umbrellas and sunbeds. Super long beach, with nice sand and only small amount of stones in the water right at the entrance to the ocean. Spiaggia lunga e larga sulla strada tra Chania e Rethimno. Superata la prima parte un po’ più popolata per via dei vari residence, ci si imbatte in kilometri di spiaggia libera alternata a piccoli lidi, dove consumando al chiosco potrete usufruire di ombrellone e lettini senza ulteriori costi. Great beach, sandy and on the day we went it was a little windy so the sea was quite wavy too. You can walk out quite far and still be able to stand up. It was great fun jumping the big waves and swimming in with them. We sat on the deck chairs in front of 'Ammothiness Cocktail Bar' which are free to use providing you purchase a drink their (they do great smoothies!) A very long sandy but shingly in places particularly at the waters edge. At the Petre Bridge end there is La Playa taverna where you will find a covered rating area beside the that serves good priced Cretan food. They also have plenty of sun beds in the with umbrellas as well as a few on the garden area below the trees which are free to use for customers. They will keep you supplied with drinks and snacks without having to leave your sunbed but are not pushy. There is a life guard station beside if you decide to take a dip. Unfortunately like the majority of Crete there are times when the sea can be very rough however other times it is like a mill pond. I would suggest taking some shoes as 1 the sand gets very hot and 2 the small stones are hard to walk on as you come out of the sea Recently went to Crete for 2 weeks and this was the closest to us. It was easy to get to, straight off the main road and plenty of parking on the roads adjacent to the beach. Every 100m or it is dotted with a restaurant and set of sun beds. It wasn't hugely busy when we went, despite being mid August, which meant it was easy enough to find beds along the stretch somewhere. Much easier if you go early or late afternoon however. Use of the beds was free provided you use the restaurant in some way, although have to say no one seemed to check this. No watersports or anything like that available, neither was it very built up so a bit quieter than most beaches elsewhere. I found the water definitely a bit choppier on the North side of the island than the South so provided you don't mind a few waves then this is ideal for something a bit more chilled. The sand is nice and good parking. Crystal clear water and shallow shore. Ideal to relax for a day at the beach. Only missing some infrastructure. Really amazing and quiet beach. Feels like heaven. We stopped there unexpectedly and ended up spending 3 hours there! La pace dei sensi, pochissime persone, parcheggio sulla strada davanti al mare.
