My husband and I visited with an excursion from our cruise ship. I would recommend this with tread. We enjoyed this and saw the church in a cave and made it to the first viewpoint which is a great view of a gorge. It is to and very shaded for most of the hike. There is a spot with picnic tables but many of them were covered in bird poop. There is also a fresh fountain. Not for drinking but to cool off with. The was very cold. Great walk. Challenging but well worth it. Some rope assisting climbs and ladders. We went from the top to the bottom and back again. Church quite early on, into the walk. Lots of wildlife to see including snakes, crabs, birds, butterflies and caterpillars. Really enjoyable and rewarding Χαίρομαι που έκλεισε η ταβέρνα η πλαστικουρα κ ο χαλασμός που επικρατούσε σε αυτό το πανέμορφο φυσικό τοπίο. Προσέχουμε κ προστατευουμε για να έχουμε I really enjoy a hike. The parking is big and well organised. This is a combination between walking, hiking and a bit of climbing. In the first part cca. 800 meters is a eazy one. Rest of it is a combination of walking, jumping on stones and using to support. Probably is a medium trail. Cca. 5 km round trip. One can make this also mid day as the keep the shadow with the vegetation. There was not a lot of when we visit it towards end of July. Definitely use hiking as sliding climbing between the is not eazy. Amazing trip for my liking. Upon return, there is a nice, quite, clean taverna where one can take a refreshment. When you first enter the you can view the church in the rocks, and explore some of the immediate area very easily via gentle slopes and there is a picnic bench overlooking the gorge. You could just view this area with a few minutes of walking without a need to do any hiking and it’s very beautiful. The starts after you cross the bridge and follow the trial to the left of the stream. This was a and interesting hike, lots of scrambling, climbing over rocks. It was mostly shaded the entire time but bring plenty of water. Wouldn’t recommend for young children or people with disabilities due to the heights and scrambling. The end takes you up to a road and you need to turn back and go the way you came. Parking right outside was super as was the route to get there. It took us just over 2 hours. Very nice trail. But also difficult. Be ready to climb over rocks. Going down is harder then going up. You can also decide to around the on your way back but that is a 2 hour Great hike. Was a bit scared to go with a six year-old after reading all the reviews that it's not suitable for kids, but it turned out to be quite OK. We did go from south to north only so on the way back it would've been a bit more challenging, but nothing that can't be conquered. So don't be scared to take kids, they'll enjoy all the climbing, ladders and ropes. For smaller kids however it could be too difficult indeed unless the parents are ready to give lots of support :) A place! The path is well preserved, helping and ladders installed where needed. Definitely worth it but quite challenging at some spots. Hiking necessary. Absolutely recommend this hike, but only if you’re physically fit and have shoes. It wasn’t hot at all, even at noon. Note that you need to return the same way you came. We completed it in just under 2 hours. A gorge. A bit difficult bit interesting. In October you may need a shoes, but i don’t have these and it’s quite to a bit in the (under the knee). The whole takes about 1,5 hours, then you will get to the Lake. To get back, you can back the same way - Or on the normal street and ask somebody for a 5’ drive to Patsos, we did it, the first car from 2 local farmers took us, very nice from them. Great place to spend some time. Not the easiest one especially if you are occasional hiker. From south to north and come back it took around 2 hours and some minutes. Arriving to the north entrance is great to follow the way to find the reservoir. Take your since there is nothing to get one. Καταπληκτικα ..!!!! Fun hike, the start is and mostly flat, the second part is more adventurous but very well equipped with and ladders. We took our time and made it to the end in 1 hour and then back the same way 1 hour. The viewpoint is and worth the extra effort. Recommend to go there in the morning to from 10am to noon. Visited mid July and there was almost no in the creek so made it in 1 hour and 20 minutes back and forth. Apporx 2,50 km in one side, ~100m elevation gain. I had trail running on so it made relatively jumping on those rocks. I assume with it would be much more difficult. In some places I saw marks above my head. So, quite without water, no idea how it is with more water. Anyway, breathtaking views, worth a visit if you are physically active and are not afraid of some challenges! This has so far been our family’s favorite in Crete. We took our very active 11 and 13 yo with us and they loved it. It took us an hour each way and was 4 mi total round trip to the reservoir and back. Make sure you follow the “south end” trail markings. It is a much clearer path than the “north end”. This is difficult. It requires all 4 extremities but delivers in views, fauna and scenery. Definitely worth the effort. For me, it was the most enjoyable in Crete thanks to the variety along the way. You’ll come across a little church, have the chance to climb over rocks, and experience more adventure compared to the well-known Samaria and Imbros gorges, which are mostly just walking. A refreshing and fun alternative for anyone looking for something different! Very fun hiking with lots of rocks, but some parts are very slippery so you need to be careful. First part is and second is harder but with hiking it is enjoyable like some game with leaders and alpine ropes. Never go alone and best time is in the morning. You must return same way trough the back to parking. Last part is hardest. There is a lot of parking space and cute taverna when you finish your hike. This was a lovely hike. Not too difficult. The history was very interesting. The owner of the tavern in town was extremely knowledgeable and kind. A great with natural views, very green and full of vegetation. And now comes the reality, it's not to cross, in spring or early summer you need swimming or get your sneakers wet, can reach almost waistline on some areas, are everywhere to help you, but still you have to be physicaly prepared to do medium difficulty climbing on and ropes. Samaria is longer but this is clearly more difficult to pass Conclusion - if you can do some medium physics you should make it, just beware the and clothes you are wearing Leuke spannende en inspannende kloof! Met trappen, ladders en touwen langs wanden en rotsen. I had a time walking the path it was just the right amount of challenge and not too hard , for some parts it almost felt like climbing rather than a hike.. it's definitely not for anyone as it is at times required to go up and down ladders and hang on to on the edge of rocks, you will need to have some that will not slip, and some with you to have a drink, i would recommend to have a sandwich or some fruit to snack and spend sometime in the area inside the trail.. There is a road when you just finish the hard part before getting to the dam where you can to the left side and get to a road where someone can pick you up from and you don't need to back (if you have a family member/friend that doesn't want to do the trail) For the meantime while they wait for you to finish they can the part back and forth and then go to a wine tasting in the area in the beginning of the trail ☺️ so , win win !
