Maison des Mégalithes

Carnac, France Visitor center

Top-rated.online cuts through the clutter, highlighting only the reviews that are most helpful, earn the most likes, or come from the most active contributors. This is the visitors centre for the megaliths, with a free parking area. There is a great shop and viewing area on the roof. Free to enter. Atmospheric. Worth getting the tour in English at 3.30pm (check times) which also makes it possible to walk among the stones. What's your theory of why they are here? Interesting gift shop with many books and a good drink selection. I’ve always wanted to visit here since we travel to this area of France each year to see relatives. It’s free unless you want a guide or take a bus/train round it all. Tips - it’s busy and very little parking in the summer. There is an additional car park just passed the entrance and drive into the town (150m on the right)… don’t park on the road (I saw traffic wardens). Or park at the middle two car parks In between each section. There’s always spaces there. English guide is at 3.30. That’s the only way to get inside and next to the stones. The alternative is walking round the outside which was good but a little paint by numbers… Google/wiki the history of it whilst your walking around. All very interesting and adds colour to t what you are seeing. I wished I knew the actual reason why they built it. It is incredible. And such as shame people have built on it, removed and built roads through it. 3 stars for the English guided tour. It’s great to walk between the stones, but too much talk (with a very strong accent, hard to understand) and the guide only showed a small part. When you walk around the free part you can see it very good too without spending money you could spend on buying beer. The megaliths at Carnac are not to be missed! What an impressive, peaceful place. The Maison had a friendly greeter who provided a map and showed my friend and I which routes to take for our hike. There's a nice gift shop as well. In the off-season, such as November, the alignments are all fenced off so you can't see them unless you are on a guided visit. All in all I found is a very boring place. I wish I had gone to see something else more interesting. The visitor centre is mainly for basic information about the Carnac stones, the place to book guided tours, toilets and a shop, and the starting place for the Little train of Carnac. There is a free car park, which is totally inadequate when busy, you can also park down the road near the sports centre, just allow plenty of time if you have booked to go on the train. You can walk alongside the fenced area for quite a distance, even down to the areas eastwards, and there are lots of footpaths and cycle paths. There's a good view of the from the roof of the centre.
