Sitting outside on decking beside the river is idyllic and quaint, although the food menu is quite limited. A great Irish village pub with very friendly locals. The menu had the usual pub offerings with healthy country meal size. The owner Des, went out of his way to make us feel welcome. Happy to visit Harry the chef in Gerties bar & restaurant. Loved the outdoor dining area, a little piece of "once upon a time" in our modern world. Bar & kitchen are seperately run which can be annoying when they don't run in " sync"! food brought out after drinks or visa versa ., however, enjoyed my dish: "Pasta Carbonara" which was delicious & " turkish delight" desert, hubby's burger was average, we missed the "steak sandwich" that was always Harry's "signature dish" in Leitrim village.. Would like to have " lingered awhile" in this unique location, the beautiful if limited seats down by the river looked very inviting. Shall return soon, thanks to all bar staff & kitchen staff who were attentive to our needs..mc Very disappointed. Their internet hours say open 10am. A beautiful, sunny 26deg day so we came for lunch to enjoy the outdoor dining only to be told they open at 4. Very nice spot. Tasty food big portions and good staff. Beautiful interior as well. Great place for dinner and prices are very friendly. Highly recommend We booked a birthday party in advance with a reserved room. They said we could come earlier in the day to decorate so we did. When we got there, they sent us back home as they claimed it was “too busy” to decorate and that they would do it for us instead. Hours later when we showed up there was no decorations put up and no room or even table reserved for us. 10 of us were left standing with no help from staff. I found my decorations on the floor in one of the closet rooms. When I confronted the employee who said he would put up the decorations, he rudely argued he was too busy to do it even tho we planned to do it ourselves. One of the managers claimed he didn’t know about the birthday even tho we had conversations with other managers over the phone. We ended up leaving as we felt we had no other choice and we’re hugely disappointed. We ended up going to the Brazen Monkey who let us decorate with music and a private bar which turned out ten times better than Gerties could ever pull off. Would not recommend booking here as zero effort was put in on their side and overall bad experience. I recommend anywhere else in Athlone would be more organised for booking events.
