Yesterday we discovered some lovely new wooden sculptures of a frog and newts on our walk. We always like to climb to the high point of the trail which is a beauty spot to sit on a bench and see far and wide over the local area. This would be a place for foraging as we found loads of blackberries (ate a few!), rosehips, elderberries and lots more. There is a good picnic area, toilets and a café too. I have deducted a star because I felt that not enough is done to encourage dog people to clean up after their dogs, after having to hopscotch in certain areas. This is a slightly more 'managed' woodland to visit in that there are visitor things, surfaced paths and landscaped areas, but the range of flora and fauna are true ancient woodland. It's really to visit somewhere like this when you are really into plant life, and it was pretty quiet, safe and serene for walking my young dog off lead when I first adopted him, just taking in nature and exploring. There were people visiting on mobility scooters which was - lots of the paths are obviously up to standard for their access needs although there are some steps and the ground can be quite wet away from the main paths. There is a and toilets plus equipment I think, but I didn't visit those myself. You do have to pay for parking but it wasn't very expensive and goes to the management of the woodland. My husband & I discovered this only this year. It's a perfect place to our senior chorkie as there are a choice of to walk, of which the purple one is just the right distance for us. There is also plenty of shade provided by the trees along this trail for a warm day. There's also a little with welcoming & polite staff. Knocked a star off as we feel the childrens equipment is mainly for 1-2 year olds or 6+ nothing inbetween. The parking payment machine is a bit difficult to follow. The lack of bins is an issue, I read the posters explaining why but surely they could be emptied. In any case we enjoyed the trip with our 3 year old. The is lovely & well priced. Toilets are basic but clean. Took my youngest 2 kids ages 5 and 7 to their Easter Forest School and they both loved it. Lots of activities to do and explore areas. Den building, mud kitchen, digging area, swing and fire pit where they got to toast some hot cross buns! Finished off with nettle tea too. The Country is amazing too. I remember it from it’s inception and it has moved through many phases. It is a place of peace and tranquility for those who seek calmness away from the turmoil of every day life. I have taken generations of the young people in my life to visit and play. There is something for everyone and yet it is not commercialised. It has maintained it’s natural beauty and it is possible to miles through the seeing the wonders of nature through the seasons. Introducing and young people to nature, adventure and the outdoor world - all happens at Fermyn Country Park. During lockdown it has been a haven; somewhere I have escaped the fears and worries of the unknown; what lies ahead? I have seen families walking together, supporting each other and finding each other through unprecedented times. Fermyn Country has been a crucial part of my life and was my late husband’s “go to” place. When we faced adversity that is where we would go to find ourselves and the reassurances we so required. Somehow it provided us with a sanctuary, a haven to re-charge our batteries. Young or old there is something for everyone. Terrible at the moment. Did their sign posted through the woods.
