I've passed this place many times over the years. It's always caught my eye as it's on the main road into Glendalough so has all the advantage of passing tourist traffic. As a result it's always been busy when we passed. Tried to get a table one time, no chance. This time it was just before midday and it was not busy yet. We got a table! The were genuinely very and helpful. Clearly they enjoy the job. The food was and fresh. The ambience in the place was also wonderful. It was like eating at Hogwarts with its old world charm. Will certainly go again. Guaranteed. 5 stars. The were with the kids too. Lovely with a fast and service! The desserts are very and look great! The price of the food is very reasonable as well! Right, so picture this. You’re in Wicklow, the sort of place that makes even the most stubborn Englishman want to buy a tweed cap and write poetry about sheep. I had my two young English cousins in tow fresh out of Portsmouth, pale from the lack of Guinness and sunshine – and thought, what better way to show them what Ireland is all about than a scenic drive through Glendalough? By the time we reached the Wicklow Heather Restaurant, they were already half convinced to trade the Solent for the Irish Sea. Now, my family doesn’t exactly travel lightly. Myself, my sister, my dad, and our giant, wet, slightly pongy German Shepherd descended on the place like a scene from *War of the Worlds*. Dad, in true fashion, marched straight in, spotted a heater, and claimed it like he’d just discovered fire. Within moments, coffees and pints began arriving in waves, like the had some sixth sense that we’d need an ocean of them to get through the day. The Guinness? Creamy, heavenly, and poured the way only Ireland knows how. The lads were instantly converted. I, of course, being the designated driver, sat there with my cappuccino and sparkling water, the sort of drinks that whisper “responsible” while mocking you quietly in the corner. My sister, meanwhile, went rogue with pineapple juice, which I can only assume was her attempt at being tropical in the middle of an Irish summer where rain is practically horizontal. The food? Well, we started with wings to share – sticky, glorious, the kind of wings that make you regret promising to share them. I went in for a vegetable soup, which was like a hug in a bowl after trudging around in the drizzle. Then came the main event: lamb stew. Dear God. The meat was so tender it practically fell apart when you looked at it. The rest of the squad ordered burgers of heroic proportions, each one stacked higher than the last. And just when you think you can’t manage another bite, along comes dessert. Cappuccinos, hot whiskey (for medicinal purposes, obviously), ice cream, and cake. It was the sort of line-up that makes you realise life isn’t all that bad, even with a wet dog under the table trying to charm the staff. And yes – the actually loved him. Smell, soggy fur, the lot. Only in Ireland would a damp German Shepherd be treated like royalty. So here’s the verdict. Wicklow Heather isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience. It’s the kind of place where you can pile in with your family, order half the menu, chat with strangers, and feel like you’ve been welcomed into someone’s home. The food? Outstanding. The staff? Legends. The atmosphere? Ten out of ten. Even with a bit of a breeze sneaking around, the craic was flowing, the Guinness was perfect, and my English cousins left with stars in their eyes. The location is great, the and bar are beautiful, very cosy and warm. The is very helpful and nice. They have a gorgeous outdoor space where you can eat and drink so I would recommend this place. Food wise it depends on what you eat. I had the salad bowl as a main, very bland. I had the burger years ago, it's ok, nothing crazy. My child had chicken goujons recently and they were lovely and fresh. The carvery sandwich is and filling but could do with a bit of green on the side (salad leaves), it is a bit bare. Overall, lovely place to come to enjoy a pint of Guinness and some food after visiting Glendalough and its beautiful region. We went with a group of 80. It was a private tour. Our meal and was fantastic! We had two entree options. Turkey/chicken which was baked or grilled salmon. Both were on a bed of mashed potatoes which were excellent. We shared baked carrots and cauliflower. Our desert was an apple crumble with berries and ice cream. The was amazing! They had the entire group served in minutes. Impressive! They were really like a team. Our entire group was commenting on how awesome the was. They handled us with ease. The place itself was the bomb!!! I could have stayed another hour looking at the stuff on the walls. What a meal! Absolutely delicious! We stopped in after going to Glendalough hiking for coffee, hot chocolate, and dessert. The was wonderful, even though they were clearly very busy and the Apple crisp was delicious! Highly recommend going to eat there. It’s a nice, casual with generally good customer service. The are kind and do their best, even though sometimes the bar can be a bit slow or forgetful , you might get your beer a little late. But they’re trying, and it’s clear they care about the customers. I had one where I asked for my food to be reheated, and it got mixed up in the kitchen. They brought me a completely different dish ( pork instead of lamb), which I didn’t eat because I didn’t like the texture. When the waitress came to check if everything was okay, I mentioned my concern, and she confirmed that there had been a mistake. The manager personally came over, apologized, refunded the dish, and even offered to make me anything else I wanted, a very kind gesture that I truly appreciated. Since then, I’ve returned multiple times. I’ve tried their breakfast, which was great, and the desserts are excellent. Overall, I’m very satisfied with the and will continue coming back. And please bring back the fried brie, it was soo good! We spent our holiday in the Wicklow Mountains and went to The Wicklow Heather three times whilst being here. It was always the loveliest experience. The food was (seafood chowder and chicken supreme are highly recommendable), the service was always really friendly, considerate and observant. We also had a really chat with Avinash who made it possible for me to have a little whiskey tasting (three selected whiskeys) with a little adjustment as per my choice. We did not have a reservation, and it was decently busy. But the hostess was very and got us seated quickly. Kids menu is on paper, and they provided crayons to color on the back. Food was excellent! It was also a mini museum with first edition literature and autographed letters from famous Irish writers like Wilde, Joyce, and Yeats!
