Sukovo Monastery is located 18 km east from Pirot, in south-east Serbia, on the road to Zvonacka Banja Spa at the right bank of Jerma River in the close vicinity of the village of Sukovo, which lies at the foothill of woody Carev Kamen Hill. The Monastery in Sukovo is dedicated to the Ascension of the Holy Virgin and it is also known as the Monastery of Sukovo village. There are many legends on the existence of the shrine on this place in the Roman Era. Greek records document the seat of Sukovo Bishopric here. Should we count the Turkish records on the taxes paid to the Sultan commenting the appearance of the Monastery which was painted in 1606, it is clear that the present day Sukovo Monastery was erected on the foundations of the previous church. Apart from being a part of Serbia's rich history, this monastery also has it's dairy. For rather low prices you can get some amazing delicacies. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves history and has a bit of an apetite for all things cheese. It is a very peaceful and calm place (like every monastery) with a nice shop. It sounds incredible, but in Sukovo there is a fresco of a saint who is depicted with an animal head!
