The sheer scale of this place is amazing. The Hillfort is so peaceful and such a great place to spend a bit of quiet time. If you are not in to rocks and hillforts/ancient history please dont bother coming to this place. The car park is excellent and I loved my time wandering. Bronze Age activity at Rathgall, dating all the way back to to 800BC has been found. Sadly the parking here is not great but this double ring fort is quite exceptional, gives great views and fits no generalization about hillforts. Its inner gate faces (almost) westwards not northwards as the gates of most ringforts do - the collapsed rooms in the inner wall open into the outer circle.... there are many interesting things here apart from the views. Excavatons have indicated that there were metal workshops here during the bronze age but really, very little is actually known about the purpose of these buildings. The default position is usually that they were military and defensive but they might equally be religious/funereal or even might have been amphitheaters for sporting and cultural events, Barry Fergal Jennings The site itself is huge. The thickness of the wall on one side of the inner circle is incredible. Great place to sit and listen to the birds and try to imagine what it was like when it was in use. Kids had a great time exploring. Had the place to ourselves on a Sunday afternoon. Plenty of parking, very clean. Bit disappointing as yes it's big, but only two of the rings are really visible and the ground is very overgrown. Good carpark though. I knew nothing of this place until I saw a picture of it in nearby Rathwood. I visited it twice as it is hard to imagine it's scale. 4 Ramparts in total. There are a few ringforts more impressive than this one but you do need to see it. New parking area with a short walk to the Rath. Those responsible for its upkeep are sowing it with Bee and insect friendly plants so don't expect lawns and grass. It's managed well in its wild state. Very remote attraction but had nice parking and a short walk between 2 cow fields. Lots of history and an amazing view. Also, there are no toilets, so be sure to go before you get there. A nice little excursion with lots of historic importance. I would advise grabbing a leaflet with the background information - which you can find at Rathwood or other tourist type places. This will arm you with not only what you are looking at, but also the significance behind the archaeological work. A very special place. Good in all weather (provided you're dressed appropriately).
