These are not natural caves, but rather a 22-kilometer-long system of mine galleries excavated between 1922 and 1966 for the extraction of quartz-bearing sand. Piusa lies on a strip of sandstone nearly 500 meters thick, composed of 99% quartz, making it ideal for glass production. After the mines closed, various species of bats and butterflies began hibernating in the caves, which is why they are now protected. Our visit to the began with a very informative film, after which a very friendly, English-speaking young woman showed us around the visitor center and the caves. The short walking trail through the area, the caves, and the visitor center are well worth the detour. Previously, one could wander around… but this was damaging the bats colony there so were sealed off. I thought we would see more of the structure. The guide was phenomenal however, what we saw on the tour was a little less than we expected. Unfortunately no possibility to go deeper in caves. It is possible to have short on nature trail. A very friendly staff, excellent tour just for a family. The knowledge and storytelling are just superb. Thank you for the day filled with joy, admiration, and wonder. The in the area felt so relaxing. Very interesting picturesque place. Good place for a on nature. Too bad you can only see the from the entrence and can't go deep inside as its too dangerous. There is a place to eat, a museum, WC, good parking. Interesting to see and hear about the history of the place. Really nice walking paths around the (on the surface). They were so accommodating to open just for us (we booked in advance). The glass sculptures and vases they sell are really pretty too so if you have some extra space in your luggage you definitely should check them out! Piusa sand are extraordinary in Estonia. You can visit with tour guide. Also you can view movie of Piusa caves. If you want to walk, then 1.5 km trail is for you. Trail goes thru Piusa forest. Есть где погулять We drove down from Tartu and we were a bit disappointed. You can go into the "caves" (just a platform) with a guide. Good location for short stop. But to far for drive from Tartu to here. It’s cool! Only complaint is the boring film we watched, that could do a remake :) The itself looks amazing, but you can't actually go anywhere. It's a guided group, where a very lovely girl told us about all of it, while we all stood in the reception area, cramped together. The group was blocking the entrance, and the noise was so bad that we missed a lot what was said. There's also a large pendulum on the sandpit in the entrance with a sign next to it saying it can't be touched. Obviously children ignored it, and the ticket seller constantly told them off. I understand the not touching part, but maybe the decor should be more people friendly. Following that you are taken into an opening of the told brief history of it, and you can take pictures. Then they advise you to on the nature trail after that and look at the sand. It is all lovely, but way overpriced for the actual experience. The area was well looked after and you can take your time to wonder around. The cafe near by offered the menu only in Estonian. Очень необычное место. Красивая природа. Гид очень приятная женщина очень интересно рассказывает историю пещер. Так же на месте можно купить стеклянные изделия в качестве сувенира. Однозначно советую посетить. A place worth the visit! The guide (service included in the ticket) is fantastic. In winter, these host the largest colony of bats in Eastern Europe! A lot of new information about bats. Highly recommended! Thanks for protecting bats! Красивое место с хвойным лесом, тропой и большим резаным карьером. Отличное место для прогулки пешком. Есть детская площадка. Вход в сами пещеры платный, за семейный билет (2 взрослых и 1 ребенок) заплатили 18,50 евро. Вход в пещеры только с гидом и осмотр пещер только со смотровой площадки (минут 25 занимает вся экскурсия), потом просмотр фильма( 15 минут). Есть кафе, где можно покушать или выпить кофе.
