The Carinthian open-air museum, as the oldest of its kind in Austria, is located in the heart of the cultural and historical heart of Carinthia in the municipality of Maria Saal. It houses rural house and farm forms from the most diverse parts of Carinthia, which provide an insight into the living and economic ways of bygone times. Also typical for Carinthia pre-industrial plants from the 18th and 19th centuries as Flodermühlen, a sawmill, a charcoal kiln and a lime kiln can be seen. In the tour, a nature trail is integrated, but also cottage gardens and fence forms can be admired. A total of 38 objects from four centuries provide insights into the rural life and work of Carinthia. Top Ok Amazing park, with a lot of restored buildings. Beautiful hike to Christophberg This is an amazing museum, must-see! I agree that there is a lack of literature in English, but you're still given a translation of the map (in English and in other languages, if you prefer). Tickets are cheap (12€ for a family of four), and the sights are unforgettable. There are preserved frescoes that remember the beginning of our era (!!!), and Roman mosaics covering the floors of the bathhouse. Their state is much better and their volume is much bigger than in Carnuntum museum. This also hat a lot artifacts, such as cutlery, jewellery, tiles and stonemasontry, gravestone remains, etc. I recommend having lunch at the Celtic Tavern after your visit. The prices are nice (3€ for goulash soup, 10€ for a wiener schnitzel, for example) and the dishes are tasty. Also, if you travel a bit higher, you can see a magnificent scenery opening from the top of the mountain. Fantastic place for people interested in history, especially in Celtic and Roman period. Big, free parking place and reasonably priced ticket fee. The whole complex is well organized with many artifacts and sites. Definitely plan to visit it in clear weather though. The only downside I found, was the lack of literature and books in English language in the store. All museums in Austria outside of Vienna seem to suffer from this. Great historical place. A must see for all who are interested in history and/or ancient rome.
