Once out, walk up a bit further where someone has been building a set of cairns. The to this place is way less than a meter tall. Unless you're a small child, the only way to get in here is by crawling in your all fours. Not sure how it's inside as we didn't feel like getting dirty to find out. There's a there that you can use, which is really nice, though it needed new batteries or to be charged so it wasn't of much use. If you go a bit above it you'll find some cairns made by people from our times, which look really good. Make sure to go up there and a piece yourself if you're here! Not for the faint-hearted that's for sure. I'm claustrophobic but curious so I did squeeze down the narrow passage into the chamber itself. The first time we visited Cuween we were driven back by torrential rain which almost formed a river pouring down the track from the to the parking area. Thankfully we were not deterred and returned the next day. What a wonderful site. In effect a smaller version of Maeshowe, beautifully preserved and as mysterious. Not quite as spectacular as it’s larger sister, it has the advantage of being much less visited so you can contemplate the eternity into which our ancestors were cast in peace and quite.
