This place is unbelievable. We did the English tour into the depths of the with hand held lamps to see 16000 year old beautiful paintings. The was fantastic, really brought to life the prehistoric world and what the people went through to arrive in the depths of the system to make this stunning art. This was like no other tour I've ever done and it's a must do if you are in the area. But you must book well in advance to avoid being disappointed. (NB the picture of the painting is from the prehistoric museum as quite understandably no photos are allowed in the cave.) Wonderful to be able to see these paintings and we had a great guide. She was interesting and able to deepen our understanding. She kindly delivered it all in English for us too. Merci! Fantastic visit to 17,000 year old paintings. Reservation mandatory as number of visitors is limited. Need good walking shoes, not for people with poor mobility due to rough terrain inside cave. Total visit about 1h45. One of the only places where you can see the original paintings not reproductions. Highly recommended. Great place to visit in fantastic scenery. A great experience steeped in history. We had a fabulous English speaking who answered all the questions and was really engaging and informative about the caves. This is a experience where you MUST have mobility as it involves walking through the up and down on uneven surfaces. The only let down was the complaining of a woman who clearly hadn't read or had ignored the advice given about mobility and should have not come. The is amazing but the was not really interested - you can see she just repeats the same stuff over and over, no real passion that I have experienced with guides from other French caves. was there with the whole family of 4, and my son (11yo) wanted to write this: "The is beautiful and i highly recommend it . Sadly you can't take pictures . The guides are excellent and are very knowledgeable. The location is very cool and there are many other caves in this region Ariege. By the way, there are also many cathar castles. And the paintings are 17000 years old . You need to reserve online to go there." My opinion as an adult: it's an amazing experience being so close to this Homo sapiens early art - the details are just WOW. Amazing, deep into the mountain, torches only. Great guide. Photos not permitted (except outside!) Fantastic visit, with a great who was so knowledgeable and personable. The grotte art was sublime and the site well presented and preserved. Thankfully no photos allowed so we had the experience without the 'shutter-bugs' hogging the view and distracting from the experience.
