The first part of the journey is mostly under the shades of the beautiful forest and only once you reach about 2/3 of your way, the view opens up reveling a fantastic panorama of the Lecco lake and the mountains of the Grigna Settentrionale on the other side. It took to us about 1h and 45 minutes to reach the shelter, but before you set out your hike be sure to pay the parking ticket at the machine nearby the entrance of the Rifugio Cainallo. Beautiful location and food. The view from the top is amazing. Ok, Italian reviews of hikes and clothes sizing both have something in common….a bit off in the sizing. The hike from the parking lot to this refugio is not “easy,” and not for small children, with several difficult spots. Also, don’t believe it when “they” say it takes 1.5 hours. We are experienced hikers with a group of five and it took almost 2.35 hours. HOWEVER, when you get to the Refugio, the food and service are excellent! And the view is spectacular all along the trails. Bring a trash bag, as you need to port out your food trays, bottles, etc. Just a few thoughts after hiking there: 1. It is not exactly an easy walk if you start at "Parking X Via Grigna". Difficult to describe. I saw a couple with a 4 and 8 year old - I am sure they did not make it. If you or your kids are teenagers though it won't be a problem. Most important: If you are a bit scared of heights you can do it! 2. Some people here complain about the price for the food. Think about the economics of a remote restaurant on a VERY high mountain which cannot be accessed by car and with only a few visitors ... it is simple economics. I paid 3.50 Euro for a coffee and a bottle of sparkling water. 3.50! Pasta is 11 Euros ... what's the problem? 3. My plan was to hike from Parking X Via Grigna to Rifugio Luigi Brioschi. I turned around after a while as it became too steep/high for me. If you plan the same and your fear of heights kick in you can go back and walk from "Bocchetta Di Piancaformia" to "Bietti" and still have a great hike. 4. As usual: Google does not show you the correct way in the mountains.
