Despite our friend mistakenly booking the day before, the staff were incredibly helpful in arranging a table for the four us. The food was excellent! Sunday roasts with all the trimmings and lovely puds - very tasty and good portions. At £28 for two courses it was great value and we would highly recommend you give this pub a try. One of the very best Sunday lunches we have had. Very quiet lunchtime. We received superb attention and service from the slim gentleman I’ve seen serve on each visit. He was considerate and smiling and the food served was very tasty and well presented. Bar and restaurant areas were clean, impeccably well laid out and tidy. All members of our party were very pleased with our lunch. Thank you. Such a great experience staying here! Our room was very comfortable and we had a decent night's sleep. Breakfast was served in the restaurant which was very nice. We were just passing through, but wished we had been staying longer as there were many walks nearby. I've eaten here four times in the last few months, the last meal was their "French Night" which confirmed that I've now found my new favorite pub. A lovely old fashined pub that's worth a little drive out, and unlike some of the other local pubs it is open for drinks until 10.30 (some in the area stop serving at 9.30). Whilst the service isn't as polished as other "fancy" pub/restaurants in the area, it is friendly and attentive and not at all pretentious. Other reviewers has stated that they had to wait for menus etc, but this isn't an issue at all. One must understand that small village pubs cant have loads of staff wandering around. I personally have never felt like I've had to wait long to be served. Food is the big star. It's not aspiring to get in the Michelin food guide by serving tiny portions of overly complicated and obscure dishes. But good portions of well cooked and very tasty dishes such as duck with black current jus, red cabbage and dauphinoise potatoes, Cock au Vin, steak pie etc. Our last meal (French Night) was one of the most enjoyable meals I have for a very long time. Confit duck (roasted leg on the bone) with black berry sause was sensational, fillet Steak with Cafe de Paris butter was so good I asked for extra butter. I had a bit left and asked if I could take it home. They wouldn't give us the left overs BUT gave us some fresh butter (enough to have with 5 steaks at home)! We had a chat with Chef at the end of our meal, and he is clearly very passionate and loves French food....we begged him to put the duck confit starter on the main menu. All very good value for money with sensible prices and we left very happy and content. I cant wait to go back. Lovely quiet village not far from Thirsk and the A1(M). A friendly welcome and a clean comfortable room. We booked for dinner and the food was delicious and service equally friendly. A 10 minute walk after dinner to the abbey ruins down the road was a nice surprise. Great bed and tasty breakfast. All in all an enjoyable place to stop over on the way up to the Lake District. Had Sunday Lunch (including starters) and the food was absolutely delicious. We had a mix of starters and all were a delight. The lamb was so tender and tasty. Huge portion sizes too! Staff were friendly, polite and attentive. One of our party was GF and this wasn’t a problem for the kitchen staff & slight changes made to the dishes to easily accommodate. We sat outside and were the only ones in the heat, but there was a cool breeze, huge umbrella & nice patio area. Will definitely return & highly recommend!!!
