There is a nice picnic area right in front car by the lake edge. Follow sign on opposite of the road to Giants trail. Go down the little path into the woods towards the bridge. You can cut through and see the giant hand carving within two minutes of walking. Explore this area behind the fence, it has the prettiest waterfall ever and no one really notices it, it's stunning. The trail up the gravel road takes you up into the woods, it's quite short and each time you come to a T junction turn right, it'll bring you back to the road eventually. Best bit is by the waterfall at the beginning. We took the main track from the car up through the woods, there’s been a lot of felling along this track (maybe from the Larch problem also seen by the RSPB centre) ? A steady climb up, drops off steeply one into the valley. We maybe a mile or so before turning back as there’s no circular that we could see. It’s very peaceful. We let our dogs off lead and they loved it and clipped them back on back towards the car park. Would be nice if a circular could be created and signposted up. Huge trees throughout. Nice car park. We also down to the shore just the other of the car park. A nice stop off. Lovely short little trails through the woods. I was expecting more larger more laid out trails like there is across the Dam but nice enough. Easy access to the waters edge and free parking. I discovered Lake Vyrnwy by chance a few years back when I was hiking through Wales. I was so struck by its beauty I knew I had to return there to explore it a little more. I had only the western of the reservoir. On returning I explored the opposite and some of 'The Giants of Vyrnwy Trail'. The giant Douglas Firs are an impressive sight, some of the tallest in Wales. And the 'Giant Hand of Vyrnwy' is an incredible sculptor - a fitting tribute to what was once the tallest in the UK 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 We arrived in our 7m long motorhome and found parking easy. We first visited the giant hand of Vyrnwy, part of the Vyrnwy trail. Standing tall amongst the trees, it was impressive. We then back to the lake and its amazing shoreline. Admiring the fantastic views in all directions, we along the stoney shore line, stopping to enjoy the piece and quiet. Maps were a little misleading but found it ok. Parking available and a nice little walk to find the sculpture and a little waterfall The was known as Giant of Vyrnwy, 50ft stump carved into a giant hand as the tree's last attempt in reaching for the sky. Lovely short, easily accessible trail Absolutely beautiful place we have been going there for many years but on this occasion Sunday 14th August we had a shock to how low the water was. Its a wonderful place for all the family so much you can do and take a picnic there's so many places for everyone to relax and enjoy this place. A 50-foot stump was the only part left standing after the 124-year-old Douglas Fir was axed at the Lake Vyrnwy estate in Powys. It had stood at 209 foot, taller than a 20-storey building, and was once regarded as the UK’s joint highest. But it had become a safety hazard. The was leaning to one side, and there were two substantial cracks on opposite sides of the main stem. There was no choice but to fell it. Now, it has become a magical work of art.
