After an 8-hour journey through relentless wind and rain to attend a university open day in Cornwall, we were craving comfort: a warm and a quiet evening listening to the storm roll in. With one of our party allergic to fish, we quickly discovered that 90% of the local restaurants leaned heavily on seafood. Italian felt like a safe bet, and after some searching, we found one, The Cornish Cookhouse tucked away about 30 minutes from our accommodation. Though it’s set in what feels like the middle of nowhere, in a small compound of businesses, the moment we stepped inside, we knew we’d made the right call. Rustic yet stylish, the interior was welcoming and thoughtfully curated. We’d booked last minute and arrived early, but were seated straightaway with warmth and ease. The chef, who shared that he’d once worked in the arts in Milan before turning to cooking later in life, has been at the helm here for over two years and it shows. The menu is small, homemade, and perfectly balanced. I had the garlic focaccia for stater with the spinach and ricotta ravioli special (not a regular feature, I was told), and it was hands down the best I’ve ever had. Dessert was a revelation. I usually avoid tiramisu because I’m not a fan of coffee flavoured sweets, but their twist, a lemon-based version was absolutely superb. Bright, delicate, and the perfect end to the meal. (They also do a traditional version for which I believe was equally as lovely) The Cornish Cookhouse is a hidden gem: thoughtful food and a passionate chef. Worth every mile — and every drop of rain. We had an absolutely fantastic dining experience here. The food was outstanding – each dish perfectly crafted by the brilliant chef, showcasing both creativity and flavor. The service was equally impressive, thanks to the two male waiters who were incredibly attentive, friendly, and professional throughout our visit. The restaurant itself is lovely, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. What really stood out was how accommodating the staff were, especially as we had our dogs with us – they made us feel completely at ease and well looked after. We couldn’t have asked for a better evening. Highly recommend to anyone looking for top-tier food, impeccable service, and a genuinely pleasant setting. We’ll definitely be returning! The Cornish Italian lives up to its fantastic reputation! The food is as authentic Italian as it comes; using fine local Cornish ingredients. Friendly Italian waiting staff welcomed us at the door as we walked in past a recent delivery of St Ewe’s Rich Yolk Eggs. The restaurant has a warm, relaxed and intriguing ambience; shelves full of lots of interesting Italian delicacies, which are available to purchase should you wish. We ordered the bruschetta to start and then - the head chef and owner - Ugo’s very own Carbonara. Both dishes were phenomenal! Ugo even made time away from his very busy kitchen to come and greet us at our table. The was finished with “Tiramisugo”, Ugo’s play on his father’s Tiramisu recipe. This is a delight which in the past we’d spotted and bought in Waitrose. This young entrepreneur and restaurant owner is going to go a long way! We couldn’t recommend his restaurant enough and we’ll be back for more. Best Italian in Cornwall! We were served really quickly and the food was delicious. I had the ragu bolognese which was the best bolognese I’ve ever had. It had so much flavour! My friends had the carbonara and they said it was really good. For dessert my friend and I had the lemon tiramisu which was incredible. The slice was massive so I ate what I could and took the rest home. I also ordered the original tiramisu to take home and they put it in the fridge whilst we ate our desserts. I thought the food was reasonably priced and I will definitely be coming back! As an Italian living in the UK I rarely visit Italian restaurants… Ugo’s cousin is a masterpiece. From start to finish, everything was exceptional. The starters were amazing, full of fresh flavours that set the tone for the meal. The freshly made pasta was outstanding – perfectly cooked, beautifully balanced, and clearly made with real passion. And then the tiramisù… wow. As an Italian, I can honestly say it was one of the best I’ve ever had in my life – light, creamy, and absolutely unforgettable. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, you can really feel the love and authenticity that goes into every detail. A true gem – I have already booked a table for my next visit! Grazie Ugo, ci vediamo presto! Delicious as ever! We thoroughly enjoyed our birthday visit and have always loved eating The Cornish Italian pasta and tirimasu whether we’ve had it to take away or from the local food festivals they visit. This was a first time for us eating in and the ambience was lovely and authentic. We were running late after a very busy day and advised the kitchen would be closing in 15 minutes so got our order in as quickly as we could and the team went above and beyond to ensure we still had a beautiful - thank you so much for ensuring my mum got to try your beautiful pasta for her birthday! We will certainly be back to dine in again in future, next time we’ll make sure we are there in plenty of time! Thank you again - so yummy and such big portions we had to take away in a box to enjoy the next day. 1st of our holiday. Started our foodie adventure of Cornwall 25 at the highest level. Absolutely Delicious! Watched Ugo make fresh Ravioli, special for the night - tasted as good as it looked. Never disappoints ❤️ What a wonderful dining experience! From start to finish our hosts were warm and welcoming and incredibly attentive. The food was out of this world, made with not only the freshest ingredients but made with love and passion. I can honestly say the focaccia is the best that I have ever eaten. My only regret is not eating here sooner. Will definitely be returning and will be recommending to family and friends.
