If we could give 0 for this disgraceful experience I would.. On Saturday we phoned at 730 pm and booked a table for dinner at 8 We arrived at ten to 8 to be greeted by a young woman who said sorry the kitchen is closed ! She acknowledged that she had accepted our booking 20 minutes previously but said the chef had just decided to close the kitchen due to no other bookings! We live in Cornwall and have never had such a shocking customer service experience The place was deserted! Obviously everyone else knows how bad it is ! We had to find another place to eat out which was busy and very nice thankfully Went for Sunday lunch, service great, chef is a character (in a good way), food fabulous, we had the carvery which was huge. We had a small and large plate (two eating) both were loaded with meat (2 types on small, 3 on large) before we got to squeeze on the veg. Everything was cooked and presented well. We're on holiday but will definitely be visiting again before we go home 👍. Booked a table here for dinner for 7 adults and 2 children needing highchairs - rang ahead to make sure they would be able to seat that many / have the highchairs. On arrival, it turned out they only had one highchair. Still we tried to sit one of the kids at the table on a chair, as it was past their dinner time. When going to order, this pub also had hardly any food, the staff refused to check what was in the curry, refused to check what flavour the pie was and only had one steak left. The staff were all rude, preferring to stand behind the bar chatting. The tables were unclean and sticky. We ended up leaving, and driving 5 minutes down the road to a lovely pub which had fantastic service. Avoid here, and instead I would recommend Shipwrights! Had the Sunday carvery which used to be to a good standard. Oh dear it’s gone down hill. Pretty much empty at 4pm on a Sunday. The beef was grey. The spuds were hard. The carrots were round tinned or frozen. Broccoli dried up. Runner beans were soggy and tasteless. The gravy was still good. Obviously cheapened it as much as possible. I imagine it will be up forsale end of next year as it’s lost its reputation now and I can see why. Although through no fault of Paul and the team at travellers rest , booking.com had overbooked us, so we were unable to stay at the property, we were in the area and thought we would come look so to stay another time. Customer service was excellent , Paul very generous, warm host made us feel very welcome and we will definitely aim to re book through them and not booking.com in the nr future. Beautiful pub and location. Staff were amazing but the food was awful. Our meals arrived barely warm. Mashed potato was lumpy with black chunks in. Sausages were not gourmet as described on the menu. Scampi was overcooked. We had waited quite sometime for our food, which we had to send back as it wasnt edible. We have eaten here many times before and always enjoyed our meals. We will not be going here again. Popped on the off chance and so glad we did. Fab Sunday carvery Joand really reasonably priced. Staff were very helpful. I highly recommend Thatchers cloudy lemon cider - zingy and refreshing. We arrived to find that due to new ownership and a booking.com mix up they were not ready for us. The owner was honest and kind and immediately set about getting an upgrade ready for us. We found the hut brilliant, well done and very sweet. We loved the location. Yes of the pub convenient. Highly recommend the mobile pizza place on the site in a Thurs-Sat evening too. We will be back. Been coming to this pub for years, always been a good meal. Food was still great however, never coming here again. Workers had just been in the beer garden and came back in smelling of weed. Absolutely disgusting, what a shame - they won’t be seeing me again. If disappointment is your thing this is the place for you. Called in for dinner after browsing the wrong reviews and goodness me it was awful. The menu was not what others had described and after making an order we were told the chef had left hence the reductions of food on offer. The food arrived with chips that looked as if cooked on the surface of the sun, no bacon on the cheese/bacon burger and after 10 minutes of waiting told there was no coleslaw as no one had made any. The staff seemed to have no idea what was going on. I refused to pay full price as it was so poor and received a reduction on the bill. I would advise people to avoid at all costs.
