It must of been quite a sight in its full glory back in the 1100’s, very impressive walls with Herringbone stone laying and a massive entry tower that may have had a draw bridge. Further additions were made in the 13th century. In the 16th century there was an attempt to put Mary Queen of Scots on the Throne, and several northern nobles took part. Eight years later the was reported to be ruined and decayed. The stands on a mound above the River Ehen. The ditches are well preserved. Part of the wall and the gatehouse are in a reasonable state of repair. The massive wall at the end of the outer bailey was part of the Great Hall. Lovely ruin of a castle, with 4 brass noticeboards giving the details of the castle. Dogs are allowed, but must be on a lead. Free to enter and open from 8am to 6pm, or sunset if earlier. Whilst there isn't a huge amount to the castle, mostly the outer shell, there are plenty of information plaques detailing the area and history. The grounds are in good condition and would make a lovely picnic spot during summer months. Visited on 4/9/25 and it looks like the local council have given up on this part of Cumbria. Whilst the remains of the were beautiful and interesting. The litter was disgusting. Not just a few cans or bottles lying around but they were everywhere. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I saw a hundred cans, bottles, crisp packets, wrappers just strewn in the grass around the castle. It also had a pungent smell of faeces. I don't recall seeing any bins for visitors rubbish either. Whoever is in charge of waste management needs their employment terminating. round that were open. Just walk around and view.
