Beautiful area for walking up to the waterfalls and much more beyond depending on how energetic you are feeling! The paths are very well used and clear, but quite rocky and slippy in some areas. It's free to enter and explore but the car is National Trust run and charges apply for non-members. The car gets very busy (as do the paths) in good weather and at weekends. Free entry!! That's unbelievable for such a beautiful place and a National trust property!! The around the forest is picture perfect and being next to the stream is super calming. The waterfalls are impressive to be up close to with excellent viewing points scattered around. There are several areas where people were paddling and having a wonderful time in the water and many areas where it's possible to have a picnic next to the stream. The National trust cafe at the start / end of the trail offers refreshments and wonderful cream teas. All in all this is a wonderful place to visit and a beautiful place to around. We arrived just before 11.30 and found the car completely full. Turned around to at a car down the road and walked the 30 mins (with kids) to the main car park. Then we did the to the waterfall. We took the lesser taken route to the waterfall, and kids enjoyed some litter picking at the same time. Amazing place. Lovely day out. We continued to the whole the whole 4.5mile trek up to Gowbarrow Fell. Really exhausting getting up for me but once at the top it was breathtaking views. Also carrying on coming back down again breathtaking views. Lovely place - a fairly easy to the falls. Many steps and uneven terrain. Easy enough for all ages. Plenty of rest stops to catch your breath if needed. Lovely little cafe by the car park. Friendly staff. Highly recommend! Beautiful scenery, did the full almost 7km and definitely worth it. The waterfalls and rapids are awesome. If you're brave enough pack your swimming gear! Really nice spot to visit. We visited it in October and it was quite quiet. However, I believe from April to September it can be very busy. We did a little bit of litter picking. Unfortunately, some lazy, selfish dog owners left their poo bags on the path! Beautiful waterfall and well worth the visit. Small carpark and seems a popular spot so might not get parked on a busy day. We were lucky enough to find a space. The is very easy, our 3 year old managed fine, and well signposted with a map to look at in the carpark. We chose to down to the right which had the most beautiful views and then down some steps to the waterfall and bridge. The is circular so you can round and up to the top where there is a small bridge then back up to the carpark. Very peaceful location and stunning scenery. Some of the rocks were quite slippery as expected but the dogs had fun scrambling around. Various paths you can take and these are well signposted. There is a toilet block and cafe by the main car which is handy. Beautiful trail through woodlands, hills and can be extended up to the fells Gowbarrow and Ullswater Way. Big car park, well kept with plenty of toilets which are open till late (I came back from a in the dark at 9pm and toilets were still open) Payment for parking is frustrating. Does not take card, needs exact change or to pay at the visitor centre which closes at 5pm daily. National Trust members it is free.
