A 26.6-hectare (66-acre) area of chalk grassland at Cley was notified as a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in 1975. The land is managed by the National Trust, having been donated to the charity in 1954 by the 6th Marquess of Bath. Archaeological features include a large univallate Iron Age fort, two bowl barrows and medieval strip lynchets. There is a legend that the was formed by the devil, when he dropped a sack of earth with which he had planned to bury the town of Devizes. He had retrieved the earth from Somerset and was travelling to Devizes when he stopped to ask an old man the distance to the town. The man replied that he had been walking for years to reach Devizes, so the devil abandoned his plan. Great walk, it only takes about 20/30 mins from the car park, my dog and wife didn't want to come,(think I wore them out the day before), when I got to the top there were cows everywhere, (so glad they didn't come, wife would have freaked out) as it's quite intimidating, weaving your way through cows that are led down and standing up, just took my time and they didn't even bother me 😄. Absolutely amazing to visit if you are in the vicinity. Free parking. No staff. The can be climbed on the face of it but it is very very steep. Or you can take a longer easier trek. I did the steep incline and decline with my very active 2 year old and he smashed it. I did get a few dodgy looks because of how sheer the drop is and if he stumbled it is a long way down. The has another on top of it. It is so beautiful up there. Definitely worth a walk. This kept us sane during the pandemic, it’s a great place for walking and taking in the views. Also it can change quite a bit depending on the weather, make sure to take proper clothes. Beautiful views. Other dog owners need to take take muck home or in the bins! Great and easy to the top Hilly on Sunday a little challenging but doable with good views. This is an amazing viewpoint looking over the Warminster countryside, and I had the pleasure of watching some local dancing during the sunset. Enjoyed my time here and will come back again. Beautiful view at the top. Very narrow trails on the edge of the hill, be careful when it's wet. Very good for kids as well as it is not too steep/high. A moderate-gentle ascent if you take the easier route going around the hill. It's a small so it doesn't take too long to hike to the top (<20 mins). Very peaceful and scenic. Definitely worth a stop (e.g. if you're heading to the nearby Aqua Sana spa). If you're planning on using public transport, then the closest bus stop is the picket post by the roundabout. Do note that there's no sidewalk so the here can be pretty treacherous (a safer option would be to take part of longcombe dr and the rest of the way through the forest).
