A history dating back to Roman times, with evidence suggesting it may have been a Roman fort. The as it stands today, however, is primarily a Norman creation, with significant construction and rebuilding in the 12th and 13th centuries. It was built to control newly conquered Welsh territory and defend the English border. Great castle, with another great history lesson, only problem is it's a bit overgrown, so you can't really get the size of it. Lovely stop, but you can access the at the moment due to the wooden pathway being to old and barriered off. Not much to see, and definitely not a day trip... but great stop if you are passing by to see one of the oldest examples of round there is. Takes a few minut3s to look around. Unfortunately, the steps to the tower are still in need of repair and are currently inaccessible, 2023. Lovely village but take care as people.tend to drive quite fast on the country lane to the area. A really lovely ruin nestled in the small village of Longtown. The gate house, inner bailey wall and tower are all well preserved and the short climb up the tower steps is rewarded with stunning views of the nearby valley. Probably 30 minutes is sufficient for a visit but I recommend you take the time to relax in the nearside community garden which is beautifully planted, has ample seating and still falls within the boundaries of the bailey which in turn gives a better understanding of the original size of the itself. There is no parking on site but the street outside may be sufficient depending on how busy the site is when you attend. Beautiful in lovely location but be aware due to ongoing restoration you can't get up or into the tower which means there isn't a lot to do there. Lovely little ruin. A lot of it is closed off with metal fencing but the views are quite something. It's definitely not a day out but would make a nice little stop off on your way to somewhere else. No car park though. Dogs must be kept on leads. Nice to include on a bike ride, interesting history.
