One of the traditions to experience in the UK at the end of January is Burns Night, and I found The Cross Keys in Taunton offering a special menu. I started with crispy pheasant strips and hot honey - tender game in a golden coating, paired with rocket and pear salad and finished with a drizzle of sweet honey. For the main, I had British venison haunch steak, perfectly cooked medium-rare and served with a rich red wine sauce, buttered mash, herb-roasted carrots, and butternut squash. To finish, I chose the Cranachan Sundae - a sweet and boozy treat of whisky and honey whipped cream, topped with toasted oats and fresh raspberries. A delicious way to celebrate Burns Night! The steak sandwich was excellent. The steak pie was tasty but a bit on the small side. Really nice pub, quite cosy. Service a bit slow but in all fairness they were very busy at the time of our visit. Food ok. Both had steak and chips, nothing special but not bad price at £16.49. Can't understand why they don't have sauces and vinegar on the tables? Also the cruets doubled as both salt and pepper but no salt in the ones on our nor some of the other tables. So never bothered having any on our chips. Dessert was very however particularly the bramley apple tart. Exceptional Sunday lunch there on 31st August, were super-friendly, service was great, food was exemplary, and all very reasonably priced too. I dined around 1230hrs, and the place was getting pretty busy by 1315hrs, so my recommendation would be eat early or eat after 2pm. This is my second visit in as many weeks, and everything has been top-notch. Visited on a Tuesday lunchtime and not packed. Menu everyday food. Portion sizes spot on and food hot. very and attentive. Pleasant atmosphere. Will definitely return. Can't understand why some people are negative. Don't let the AI bot put you off! The cross keys is Still a fantastic family dining spot. Straightforward tasty filling food in a rustic setting with prompt wonderful service . The two young ladies that served us were Emily and Sammy. We needed to book a meal at short notice. We needed to take our very well behaved dog. And wanted somewhere that did something other than just chicken nuggets and chips for the kids. The online booking system didn't seem to be working so we picked up the phone. The AI bot was off putting t first but I can see why they use it to free up busy waiting and bar staff. Our main concern was that they may not accept our dog, but they do allow well behaved dogs in the bar eating area. The food was spot on hearty and filling. Also very well priced. What I like is that the kids can have mini adult meals such as gammon or steak and chips. Went in fot lunch with my wife whilst waiting for the groomers to finish with the dog. Manager behind the bar told us we couldnt have foot as they were booked until 3,25pm now there were 10 people MAX in there and plenty of tables. This turned out to be a thing i guess as the 2 tables around us ended up with 25% off the total bill as the kitchen messed up. Thank goodness for small mercies I guess. What an unexpected delight. I don’t have especially high expectations of the food at the Cross Keys but I couldn’t have been more wrong. A really menu with a great range of dishes to choose from. All dishes were excellent and flavourful. The were helpful and attentive. Really happy to give 5 stars for the experience. Had a wonderful meal this evening for our daughters special birthday! 17 of us and we all enjoyed the variety of food we had . Waitress very attentive and efficient. and the man was really and helpful. Will be back and spread the word. Booked a to meet up with my sister and neice for my daughter's birthday which is in a few days. Our party was 6 in total. Was shown straight to our which had a birthday card on it which was a very nice touch. Surprisingly we had quite a wait before our drinks order was taken and another long wait before our food order was taken too as whilst it was busy it was no where near capacity and we weren't told of any delays at the time of ordering. Not great when we had a hungry 6 year old with us! All in all we waited an hour and 20 mins before we were served our food which was a shame as the waitresses were very pleasant and the food when it arrived was very and excellent value for money apart from the child's meal which was the macorni cheese and garlic bread. At £7 it was over priced for a very small ramekin of macaroni. The menu had something for everyone and the presentation was excellent. All in all we had a really nice meal in very nice surroundings with food. Definitely would recommend the pub for the surroundings, pleasant and quality of the food. Went for a Sunday to celebrate one of my friends birthdays. Majority of our group ordered the Sirloin beef that was served pink. When all the beef roasts arrived, they were burnt. When one of the members of the group asked for more beef, the waitress told us to wait a moment and never came back with more. I personally went for the Turkey roast, which was mediocre at best. All in all, out of 9 of us, only 1 person enjoyed their food. Wouldn't recommend for a but might be at other times. Went for a meal and took our dog! We had booked a in the bar area as dogs are welcome in there, we had plenty of space as the tables weren't all squashed together. The atmosphere was lovely, the attentive and and the food was delicious. Highly recommend! We had a evening! Amazing and at The Cross Keys — they make you feel incredibly welcome from the moment you walk in. The food was full of flavour and clearly made with care. It’s a lovely, relaxed environment, especially great if you're bringing your dog along. Highly recommended for a warm, enjoyable visit! I normally don’t write reviews, but for this one I had to so maybe it will bring some changes. Me and my wife have been coming to Crosskeys Taunton for almost 3 years. We thought we found a paradise on the island with super tasty food, very and professional staff, the place itself was very clean and cosy. It all started to come down a year ago, when we came for lunch expecting same food quality, but my fish stew wasn’t as nice as it used to be, I thought probably chef changed and he was making same food his own way. Not taking any notes on that, we still chose Crosskeys as a favourite place to eat, but we only got back more and more tasteless food. Last straw happened yesterday, when I ordered beef burger and my wife had Sunday pork version. My burger patty was horrendous, it had a smell of wet old towel, I couldn’t even process it to finish off. My wife’s was as bad, pork was dry and tough, it surely was left somewhere on a stove to ‘die’. Veggies were just one big tasteless mush on a plate. I’m really sorry for this comment, but I hope it will reach the audience who can make changes and bring bag tasty food to the table. For now, we will not be coming back to Crosskeys. We had a great time recently at the Cross Keys! They managed to squeeze our group of 10 in for a Sunday lunch at last minute which we were really grateful for (male over the phone was very and helpful!) When we arrived we had a warm welcome! We were shortly shown to our followed by a very yummy with plenty of veg and gravy - the potatoes were fab! Our server Sammy was very attentive, and helped get whatever we needed! We already can’t wait to come back next month!
