Super cool We spent a weekend at Sotam House. This is a beautiful place to be at if you’re looking for relax. This house is surrounded by nature, quiet, and wonderful people. I’ve to say that one of the best things was meeting the owner. He’s a very nice person always checking up on you to make sure you’re having best time ever in Portugal. Plus he baked our breakfast; fresh homemade bread and delicious (homemade)jam.... A big thank you to the owner, he made us feel like at home and was friendly all the time with our dog 🐶. If we have the opportunity to come back, we will stay here for sure. Great spot. Affable English speaking host Joao who bakes fresh croissants daily. Cozy and warm in the wood-heated living room. Lovely walks in the little village. A friendly kitty hangs out in the wood shed. Room a bit cramped and never enough hooks and hangers. Overall excellent. Oh, also fresh squeezed orange juice, but don't expect bacon and eggs or fresh fruit. Very nice apartments with their aura and story. I booked SOTAM COUNTRY HOUSE expecting a peaceful, comfortable space to rest and work but what I walked into was a nightmare. Upon arrival at 10 PM, I found the bed sheets dirty, with pubic hairs and pieces of toilet paper. Absolutely revolting. I switched to another room — no lamps worked — and when I finally lay down, I started feeling itchy. My skin was covered in brown residue, and I ended up awake the entire night, scratching, exhausted and disgusted. I was alone, in a remote area, with no car, and honestly, I was afraid. Reporting the issue in the middle of the night didn’t feel safe. The next day, it got worse. The bath mat was filthy, with black stains and dirt. The living room sofas were grimy, one with a huge green stain it had crumbs and there were stickers on the carpet. When I moved a small table, a cloud of dust exploded into the air — I literally started having trouble breathing 😖😖 I had brought €70 worth of groceries, and when I opened the fridge, everything was spoiled. It was plugged in, but not working. I lost all my food, had nothing to eat, and no way to replace it. For all this, I paid €500 — and couldn’t even get a clean bed, a functioning fridge, or a safe environment. I called Booking.com support and was on the phone for nearly two hours. The host denied everything, refused any refund, and only offered to send someone to clean — at 8 PM, after I’d already said I felt unsafe and was leaving. Despite that, the host sent two people to the house. I had to ask them to leave. I was terrified. As if that wasn’t enough, I later stepped into a hole in the hallway, caused by a broken floorboard — an actual safety hazard. Now here's what really shocked me: the online reviews do not reflect reality. I read them before booking — glowing, positive, full of praise. But based on what I saw and experienced, I strongly believe that many of those reviews are fake or written by bots, or possibly by people connected to the host. The photos are also misleading — the house is in a state of serious deterioration. Older reviews mention issues like mold, humidity, dirty beds, which were exactly my experience. The sudden wave of positive ratings feels incredibly suspicious. I really hope that Booking investigates this listing. No one should go through what I did. Until then, if you're considering staying at SOTAM COUNTRY HOUSE — don’t. It’s unsafe, unsanitary, and the online image is completely fabricated.
