We climbed together for two in two different sectors in Kalymnos. Fred knows Kalymnos inside-out and selected sectors which had a large number of routes in my personal grade range and which were located in the shade (we were in the afternoon). Fred was a coach with a focus on safety and the two were an intense and fun learning opportunity for me. It was my first in Kalymnos but I will definitely come back next year and will hopefully he able to climb with Fred again. We booked three with Fred in April and were curious to see if he would actually come on September 15th – and he did! 😎 We found Fred to be a punctual and reliable guide who catered to our needs perfectly. He neither under- nor over-challenged us and gave us tips for our next vacation on Kalymnos. He is insanely knowledgeable, and incredibly kind and patient. He is a very good instructor — I loved the way he explained concepts and I saw improvement even within my session with him, by implementing his tips. My 3 friends and I were a group with mixed outdoor comfort and levels, but Fred helped us all have an excellent session. He set up some nice top roping routes for us in a very pretty area with a beautiful view of the ocean. I appreciated that he had a calm and relaxed vibe but gently encouraged and pushed us, and was always attentive. He prioritized safety and care for equipment. He was also very communicative, responsive, and flexible when it came to booking. He inspired me to get better at and come back to Kalymnos! :) We had 5 of with one training session each day with Fred. Before our stay in Kalymnos we only went bouldering inside and had a few sessions of indoor toprope. Our aim was to learn lead and to belay each other safely, even with our weight difference of 26kg. Fred is an experienced climber and teacher and just in general an interesting guy, that is passionate for his sport and all the techniques behind it. When he has an opinion he always tells you about the pros and cons, so that you can decide on your own. Already on the first day we went lead climbing. On our third day we learned to belay each other. Additionally we did fall training and got used to safety rules. On our last session we trained pushing our selfs and got some tips about mental aspects. Meanwhile we learned a lot more from techniques to apps and belay devices. On our sixth day we went completly on our own and felt pretty safe. We did not expect to learn this much in such a short time. We are really thankful to had such an teacher, who answered all of our questions and taught us all we need to be autonomous on the rock. We are back on our second visit to Kalymnos and realised we forgot to leave a review for Fred! Which seems a bit criminal since we had a brilliant experience. So, better late than never. On our first trip we spent 4 with Fred, we met up at a nice cafe where we discussed what we wanted to achieve from the sessions, our previous and all the possible activities we could do. After this, over the 4 we worked on our technique, strategies to manage the fear of falling, efficient clipping techniques and we went to various sectors around the island for some climbing. He knows the island like the back of his hand and was able to take us sectors suited to our abilities. Fred is also an expert on local restaurant recommendations and suggestions for activities. Overall we had a fantastic with Fred. He helped improve our sport game, gave us some recommendations for the island which set us up for the rest of the holiday and we couldn't recommend him enough if you're thinking of coming to Kalymnos.
