An Amazing place to visit, it's an old ruin situated in Hora near Porthia it is difficult to find the foot of the trail to the castle ruins but well seeking, it was once inhabited until the 18th century and has some lovely tiny 15th century churches in the ruins that hold stunning frescoes, it's a brilliant place for a hike take some good walking shoes and enjoy the stunning of the mountains and the port town of Porthia. Well the climb up the initial steep, but well maintained steps to through washing lines and small holdings. It's a shame the has fallen into disrepair as a visitor attraction as clearly a lot of EU grant /money was spent setting it up. The facilities are now derelict yet that doesn't detract from the itself which is still impressive. The information boards from when the was formally run and are really informative. There are whitewashed chapels that are at odds with the other derelict buildings as they are in a reasonable state. Some still have frescos inside. The are spectacular. There are a couple of quite well maintained paths through the site. One to the left after you enter takes you to the abandoned visitor center with information boards and some of the chapels. The one to the right gives the best access to the walls. It is not easy to find good from the walls as there are no bulwarks. Take care as most of the is not easy to access due to its ancient nature and disre okpair. Nevertheless it's well it Off the beaten path. Truly through the backyards walking by chicken coops, cloth lines, and dog kennels. We parked in the only tagged google parking spot, and hike through the village and backyards to the somewhat paved stairs to the castle. Yes a few steps, bring liquids. Early in the day the better. Great view from the top. Interesting chapels and for the most part you will feel like Indiana Jones. Watch your step these are real ruins. Wow, what an amazing experience! A fairly tough hike up to the entrance but once inside you are rewarded with churches that you can still enter and downtown Pothia. Visiting the Castle of Chora in Kalymnos was a mix of history, scenery, and a bit of eeriness. Perched on a hill, the ruins offer stunning panoramic over the island, and wandering through the remains of old stone houses and small churches really takes you back in time. What makes it even more interesting is how abandoned it feels—almost like people suddenly left and never returned. That slightly spooky vibe, combined with the quiet surroundings, makes it a unique place to explore. It’s not crowded at all, so you can take your time soaking in the atmosphere. The walk up is manageable, and the are well it. If you enjoy places with history and a bit of mystery, this is definitely a visit! Great little hike. It's total deserted. You have to walk through whats feels like peoples backyard and you meet stairs. But cool little visit. Don't expect anything wild, but the story behind is cool.. NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! The steps up are steep and uneven. Once you get up there and through the gate, you'll see that the interior of the castle continues to climb upwards and you're only 2/3s to the top, so don't rush the initial steps and save your strength! There are only 2 well formed paths in the castle, and a lot of poorly defined tracks which involve scrambling through weeds and over rocks. Also, there are lots of open voids and drops of over a metre into cisterns, not to mention the higher drops along the edges of the walls so take care. That said, this is one of the most amazing archaeological sites I've visited and deserves to be more widely seen. The preservation of buildings is best in the northern half of the site, especially the north-east, and I'd recommend making a beeline for that area. It looks like the government reconstructed part of the and installed a small museum with a toilet block, but it never opened and has all been trashed now. However there are panels with maps and more information on the fort than I'd been able to find anywhere else on the internet and I've attached photos. The map was especially useful. Almost all the churches have doors with latches, and are accessible. Start your ascent early in the morning. Take plenty of water and anything you may need to eat. Seriously, think twice before leaving the paths, and stay safe. Also remember that the churches are still significant places of worship to the community and be respectful. Beautiful and well the hike to get there, it's been abandoned but it's still interesting to look around, especially the little chapels. Beautiful and it feels like a little adventure.
