Saw a performance of Rigoletto, with subtitles in Hungarian and Romanian. Principal singers were great; the set design was a bit bland. No AC in the theater, so it was a little hot. The bar was closed but the vending machines were open. Neat sculpture busts of prominent artists on the first floor. Would definitely visit again for another performance. High quality opera, deserving of the award for best house in the country for the year 2024. Acoustics are good, singers are talented, and the orchestra is on-point. Pe ansamblu sunt foarte buni. The seats are comfortable, so I could enjoy the opera. There is no bar where you can have a drink or take a bit in the pause. An esablishment of culture which presents high standard shows interpreted by very talented artists. Former Summer Theatre. Is a beautiful and cozy meeting hub. Great acoustic, lighting and sitting spaces 👏👏👏 They show nice performances. Raymonda was entertaining. The only problem is to find a parking place nearby. An old fashioned theatre with a warm atmosphere. Quality shows with talented actors. As far as I know every show is subtitled in Romanian and English. I had the pleasure of seeing several creative and imaginative here, with lots of exciting bits (and hilarious ones, where appropriate), and with a good balance between period and modern. The performers and the musicians were spectacular. The venue may seem a bit unremarkable from the outside at first sight, although from the details inside you can tell that it used to be stunning in its heyday (still pretty, but quite old and beat-up). I’ve heard rumours about renovations planned, so fingers crossed they will happen soon. Tickets were 30-50 RON. If they’re outside your budget, they’re still well worth it as an occasional treat. There is also the more economical option of reserving season tickets for the following year. In December 2022 I payed 100 RON for 5 pre-selected that are on this year and I can choose the best seats, which would have otherwise cost me 250 RON in total (so it was a bargain, really). For students it was 50 RON for 5 performances, with the added bonus that they could pick which they wanted to see. Occasionally there are also free performances, either at the venue or on the main square downtown (two coming up now in late-June), you just have to stay tuned. Their website could actually use an English language option (they do have a Romanian one), as well as an app for receiving updates or to make ticket ordering a bit simpler (especially for season tickets), but I understand that they seem to be underfunded. Non-Hungarian speaking should not be put off by the presumed language barrier either, as are all accompanied by Romanian surtitles projected above the stage and many also by English ones in addition to the Romanian text (I’d personally give them a call beforehand to ask which ones have the English ones, but even without them, the experience is still enjoyable and not underwhelming at all). There were several Romanian-speaking in the audience each time we’ve been there, as well as a largish Spanish-speaking group sitting next to us last time, and they all seemed to have enjoyed themselves thoroughly, so please ignore that flippant one-liner in Romanian from a previous reviewer just because the name of the house contains the word “Hungarian” for historical reasons (it’s clear from their phrasing that this person hasn’t actually seen any here). And if you have a preconception that is just for fancy in swanky gowns and stuffy suits, definitely don’t let it put you off. The audience were an even mix of dressed up to the nines and in casual attire, but all very enthusiastic and their energy was phenomenal. I was also pleasantly surprised by so many college-aged young and families with kids in the audience. There was even an entire middle school class there one time (all well behaved, I must say). If you feel like is too high-brow for you, Don Pasquale for instance is refreshingly funny and very accessible for all, while the Mascagni coming up soon (for free on June 24, downtown on the main square!) has some of the most beautiful music you’ll ever hear. I fact, you may just find yourself addicted to here. Their programme otherwise is very diverse, there is a symphonic rock concert on right now, they had operettas on a few months back, and then there are with those in mind who are entirely new to opera, some of which are just perfect for kids (eg. the Bartok currently playing). The same building also houses a theatre, which sometimes stages musicals, and which I can only recommend as well (their Fiddler On The Roof was especially wonderful and touching).
