Mainly Lead and with quartz and Barium salts. Many railway tracks still showing with points Power houses and boiler chimneys, smelting works, grading and filtering equipment. Wheel houses and bull wheel with winch gear still in place. Free access. Lovely little place this to come and explore or rest a while if your on a local / bicycle ride. The mines are staffed by and usually open on Sunday and bank holidays only between June and October but with Covid this has changed ( see picture of date / times ) some parking available and there is disabled parking. There are toilets 5 mins drive away at the jct. No places to eat or drink so bring your own and please take your litter home. It's great to see places like this being preserved for future generations as we lose more and more of our industry in the UK and what made us great! Snailbeach mine is free to visit, very large area with most of the buildings surviving. On the website it tells you when the are present to do tours of the mine, one short for £3 & a longer deeper which is pre booked only . On open days the buildings are unlocked to view & watch a video, buy books etc. On non open days just around the site. Parking in the village with toilets on the car park. A very place, worth a look around, unfortunately the weather wasn’t on our side so was a quick visit. Didn’t find a carpark! We visited late afternoon when officially closed but still enjoyed walking around and seeing the external remains of the old lead mine and community links An with some above-ground remnants of the mine that you can around. There are information panels to explain what is there. However, to get the most out of a here it looks like you need to get yourself on one of the volunteer-led underground tours (limited days, Google for available dates). Seeped in the local history of a Shropshire mining community that has become reclaimed by nature but lovingly kept as a place of genuine heritage. We stopped here as it was the exact halfway point for walking the Offa Trail (number 14) and we thought it a picturesque place to lunch. We were glad to do so - it was eerily quiet and after lunch we wondered about taking in the multiple points of interest and reading up on the wealth of information provided for tourists. This small village was clearly an educationally historical high point of our walk. We even saw a wolf (someone’s wolf like dog) standing on top of a slag heap as we left the village - spooky! A really set of ruins. Some need a hike up a reasonably steep hill and again to view the chimney. Worth a though and you can imagine the conditions that people had to work in when you around the sight. The visitor's centre has always been closed when I've visited (summer). Update... A good example of a lead mine. Going at the weekend is a good idea as you can take a short trip into a mine shaft for a nominal fee. The guides are informative and knowledgeable about the history of the mine and it's geology. The itself is split over a few levels and steep inclines need to be negotiated to get to them, especially the second and third levels. A worthwhile visit. Had a wonderful underground doing Perkins level and the day level tour. The guides who are all do an amazing job keeping this bit of industrial heritage alive. Wonderful place!!! Can't express enough the time and effort that the put in. We've just been lucky enough to do the Perkins level walk, amazing!!. Thank you hugely to the eager Trust who made it all possible! Very atmospheric place to visit, was great to meet a couple of who man the at times. Their passion for the and their historic knowledge of the area really brought this back to life, you could imagine the true hussle and bussle of the mine and all the sounds and smells that would have filled this very important historical location. Nice little around the ruins of an old lead mine. To actually go into the mine as part of a guided group tour, on a Sunday. for the open day tour, the guide was extremely knowledgeable, was around 80 mins. You need wellies as there is quite deep water in the mine. Beautiful place and a lovely day out even in a drizzle. The parking is down the hill as well as free bathrooms and changing facility. We went for a late afternoon and found snail beach lead mine on google. A lovely walk, great views and really interesting. Public toilet at the bottom were awful!!!!!
