Well I am not sure how the pie has won awards and world famous as it's nothing special at all. It not unpleasant but I have had much better. Allams of Wakefield do a much better pie. We sampled a Cornish pasty which was bland and mushy on the inside. Having wandered around the town was really looking for coffee and cake until I saw this place and suddenly a pie became essential, I wasn't disappointed. Went for the a sensible sized pie for one, which they were happy to cut in the shop. Took a coffee as well and wanderer to the table outside to enjoy an excellent pie and watch the world go past. Great pastry, superb filling. They claim them to be world famous, don't see why not. Not really sure what the fuss is about. Big queue on a weekend suggests they should be good. pie was pretty generic, the pasty was a bit soggy and just had mash in it, not a lot of beef, it flavour. The sausage roll looked like pink minced meat and gave us tummy ache. Looked raw still. My son’s verdict: like Gregg’s but worse. Ask the orbs we bought were heated in a microwave and were flaccid, with no bite to the pastry. All in all, disappointing. The sausage rolls at the craft cafe were 100 times better and at least appeared home made with proper filling. Pasty and small pie purchased as a treat based on reputation. pie was very salty and definitely tasted better. Pasty was the worst my wife has had, filling was just a mush with no discernable meat chunks, as there should be Eley’s pie has its ups and downs. The seasoning is bold and flavorful, but the pepper is heavy-handed, as it lingers on your tongue long after you’ve finished eating. What really stands out, though, is the greasy aftertaste it leaves, almost like a thin layer coating your mouth, which takes away from the overall experience. The itself is one of the better parts, crisp, golden, and sturdy, with a satisfying crunch. But when you cut into it, the filling is dense and compacted, and the colour is disappointing. Instead of the appetizing pink you’d hope for, it’s a dull grey, which makes it feel less fresh. It’s not a bad pie, but the greasiness and the appearance of the meat make it hard to fully enjoy. I don’t see how they’re award-winning, personally. The minute I saw this shop I had to purchase. The best pies ever. Brought back in my olden days of a real good pastry, jelly, pie. So delicious. A must visit. The pie was over seasoned and inedible. The was hard and dry. The meat was very fatty/greasy. Total waste of £5! The sausage roll was ok. Had a lovely medium pie, much better than the supermarket ones. I highly recommend this place. Fantastic pastry, just the right amount of seasoning.
