Interesting set of three parallel neolithic henges. The wooded one separated by the Nosterfield road, and the other two by the Thornborough rood where theres parking of about three cars. The gates are wheelchair friendly onto the short grassy fields Parking on the side of the road between the 2nd and 3rd henge, no amenities, free parking and free entry, dogs allowed, not wheelchair access The northern at the moment can't be accessed but funding has been acquired to buy this for the nation. Well worth a if in the area to these Neolithic monuments, easy walking but amazing to think our ancestors walked here 4,500 years ago Thornborough is a unique and globally important cluster of Neolithic monuments. Three huge circular – sometimes described as the ‘Stonehenge of the North’ – were constructed here on a raised plateau above the River Ure about 4,500 years ago. Each was surrounded by an earthen bank, and is about 250 metres in diameter. The were important to ancient peoples as places of ceremony and funeral rituals. These earthworks are thought to have been part of a ‘ritual landscape’, and form part of the most important concentration of Neolithic monuments in the North of England. The three were aligned along a north-west to south-east axis, stretching out over a mile. The southern entrances of the northern and central are aligned with the midwinter solstice sunrise. This was part of a wider practice of orientating Neolithic monuments to the solstices. The northern is the best preserved, and has recently been opened to the public. it and get a sense of its immense history and spiritual importance. Free entry. Open any reasonable time during daylight hours. Fantastic place to visit, dog friendly, very peaceful and other visitors are extremely polite. Well worth a if you're in the area. Parking a little limited in the lane. Parking for this EH is on the grass verge adjacent to and is showing signs of winter use and could do with some maintenance. Couple of information boards at entrance. Large well maintained area of grassland and widely used to exercise dogs. Site would be quite non descript without the supplied information, but a nice walk on a historical site. I love to the once or twice a year to walk and wonder at the ancients ability to build such amazing structures. The northerly in the wood now has easier access and you can park at the nearby Nature Reserve to see the wonderful bird collection. Would you like to a Neolithic that isn't swarming with people or windswept? Thornborough are for you. Today, It was just us and at one point, the English Heritage volunteer caretaker. It's a beautiful, peaceful that is totally devoid of amenities... but from my perspective, it was perfect. The is flat but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to someone who requires assistance as the footpaths are not prepared. Parking is extremely limited (3 or 4 spaces - typical english countryside lane turnouts) - on a weekday and you will be there alone. I'd allow an hour or so to walk around the lower two henges. The 3rd (northern) was recently obtained by English Heritage and is being prepared for visitors. It is currently covered in trees but its perimeter ditch reportedly remains largely in tact.
