Jahrhundert gegründet worden sein. Die wahrscheinlichste Datierung ist wohl das 15. Jahrhundert, die These stützt sich auf einen Text der ältesten Ikone „Enthauptung des Johannes“ in der Klosterkirche. Im 17. Jahrhundert wurde das Kloster nach mehreren Türkenüberfällen verlassen, erst 1861-1863 erfolgte durch den heute als Ortsheiligen verehrten Jerontojiannis eine Restaurierung und Erweiterung des Klosters. Nach vollbrachten Krankenheilungen zog er sich schließlich in eine Höhle oberhalb vom Kloster zurück weil der Zustrom an Hilfe suchenden Menschen den Türken missfiel. Seit 1982 sind die als wundertätig geltenden Gebeine des Jerontojiannis in einem Glasschrein der Klosterkirche zu bewundern. Am 29. Free entrance, but there is schedule about siesta time, don't forget to check before arrival. There is small parking area and usually not many people there. Nearby there is very impressive gorge, if you like hiking. You can try and go uphill so to park next to the door If you are lucky :-) - a must see if you are south east Crete - cannot compare to other monasteries since it is quite new compare to other in the island . Monks can get you a coffee and a treat :-) It’s a monastery and I can honestly tell you they do not enjoy visitors. I speak Greek they made it very clear to me that they did not enjoy visitors. They told me they had a lot of work, keeping up with the just baptisms. so I would say out of courtesy to them it’s better not to visit Super pretty.
