Free access (from the N end - see below). **Be aware that the owner of the former station house at the S end of the does not permit access through his property, so if you want to continue towards Alston, or you're coming from Alston, you will have to take the roundabout down under the S end of the and back up - it's in a poor state and there are lots of steps, so it's very difficult for older/disabled pedestrians and also cyclists**. The official Pennine Cycleway route is now a signed on-road diversion around the bridge, but it's worth cycling up onto the bridge anyway just to see it, even if you have to then turn back. I headed to Lambley from Hallbankgate and then followed the brown tourist signage for the and South Tyne Trail to the car park at Coanwood. The car park was a reasonable size, and a vehicle was leaving as I arrived, well timed on my part. Both the and the South Tyne Trail are well signposted from here. I crossed the road and followed what was the former South Tyne Railway passing the platform of the old station and on to the Viaduct. There's another much smaller car park at the old station, and to do a loop of the Viaduct, you can go straight on or follow the signs for the footbridge. I decided on first. This whole stretch is accessible, and there are no facilities. Once on the Viaduct, there are stunning of the South Tyne River and beyond. On exiting the Viaduct, you follow the metal staircase down to wood framed steps that head down to the riverbank. You can see the footbridge from here where you can get stunning of the itself. Once across the footbridge, follow the through the woods alongside the river. Once out of the woods, you'll be among grazed floodplains. You can follow the along the riverbank, but bear in mind that you need to head up towards the cottage and houses up on the ridge to get back to where the old railway platform is. On my next visit, I will down to the riverbank and over the footbridge first. That way, I can check exactly where the footpath is located, to and from, the woodland for future trips. I will definitely do this again as the scenery and wildlife were absolutely fabulous. My favourite part was watching the Nuthatch fledglings. A bit of a hike to get to ! Be ready for climbing quite a few steps …but the view you get is worth it. You can a loop around from either end of the viaduct. Beware if your not good with heights best avoid. Pity it’s blocked off at the moment because of structural damage but we took the underneath and spent some time by the beautiful river.
