Go see this museum! It's a lovely small with three areas of focus including the local impacts of world war II. There are multiple languages on many of the descriptions but having Google translate it was still very helpful for some of the smaller signs. We had some time to kill so we just went up the road to this lil museum. It's pretty good for how small it is. Goes over a lot of stuff from WWII to the native peoples to the history of the town. The gift shop was nice and they had a little cafe that we weren't able to take part in. It's only two floors but it's enough to not kill you if you don't like museums. This is an extensive about the building of the town, the Sami people and the destruction due to WW2. I think it is worth the trip. There us a nice cafe for a coffee and sweet snack to enjoy. There are displays that emphasize the many culture and nationalities and their interplay here. The displays use different techniques to tell the story - better than most small regional museums. The centrepiece is a WW II Russian fighter plane rescued from a local lake and restored in Cold War Russia. Three-in-one about 30 minute walk from the harbour. The main exibits deal with the occupation of the town during WWII, Sámi life and culture and iron-ore mining in the area. It is difficult to miss the restored Ilyushin Il-2, better known as the Shturmovik, together with disassembled equipment. Two aspects of the campaign which had been previously unknown to me were partisan activity in the area (then occupied by Nazi forces), with guerrilas having to hide in desolate parts of the coastline feeding information back to the Soviets. Some of these were most unfairly treated after the war but have now been decently rehabilitated. The second collection was to do with the collective refusal of Norwegian teachers to have anything to do with the Quisling regime and the consequences of taking such a principled action. That was an absolute eye-opener. The charming cafe downstairs was hosting a small group of ladies knitting! A warm an welcoming space. If you have the time, well worth the straightforward walk.
